TEST DRIVE MEME #05

Hello and welcome to the The Next Night's test drive meme for December-January! Thanks for your interest in this GPSL! We operate on a rolling application system. Applications are always open and will be judged on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Next Night is currently set to end in spring of 2021, so this will be the last TDM posted - but don't let that dissuade you! There are plenty of opportunities for new characters to get involved in current game events as the community of Beacon unites to deal with a world-ending foe.

While you're here...

  • Take a look at our rules and faq pages to familiarize yourself with The Next Night.

  • Note that we will have an application cap of 10 apps for new players, and that the game has a player cap of 60. An accurate count of current players will always be available on the taken page.

  • TDM threads can become game canon if both players wish. If the situation isn't something that could happen in-game, you're free to chalk it up to some strange hallucination, a shared dream, or other mysterious circumstance.

  • Note that top-leveling is not limited to new characters! If current players wish to post a starter, they are welcome and encouraged to do treat the TDM like any other game-wide event. Current players are welcome to post logs or network posts using TDM prompts as desired.

  • If you plan to apply, please keep in mind that we do require at least one sample thread on the application to be from our TDM (though it doesn't need to be the current TDM).

  • You're welcome to use the provided prompts or come up with something on your own, but we do ask that all threads take place in our game's setting.

  • As we no longer plan to have a bimonthly game-wide HMD meme, we will require all new applications going forward to have a HMD post somewhere on the journal and we will ask for this as part of the application process.

Thank you again, and we hope you'll choose to join us!

log prompts

the walls, the walls are coming down

After Dr. Solis' disappearance, the people operating the portal have occasionally struggled with bringing in new people. So they widen the parameters. Select all target sectors of the multiverse. Surely, this has to be better, right?

For some of you, the last thing you remember is dying. Maybe it feels like a moment ago, maybe a lifetime. But now you awake in darkness, with a lantern your only source of light, and a tablet that prompts you to sign on to a network at your side. The locals must be these strange thing surrounding you - some humanoid, some animal-like, others something else entirely, but they encircle you, masked faces pressing closer, until one shrieks and squeaks and takes you by the hand, or shoves you, or simply tries to herd you to the large bonfire in the center of an open square.

For others, you're quite sure you were just recently alive, and possibly in the middle of something important. And when the forest spirits try to haul you off, their hands pass right through you. Your lantern flickers. The network prompt blinks, but entering a username doesn't seem to get it to go anywhere until it finally lets you on as an anonymous guest user. Strange. But while you're here, you might as well enjoy the sights, right? Hopefully this is just some strange mistake and you'll wake up shortly with nothing more than a headache to show for it.

Note: for characters who are not dead, they will function as "ghosts" for this TDM - however you want to interpret that! If you decide to app them to the game, they will have to end up dead as part of their arrival in Beacon, but are allowed to remember the events of this TDM once they have died and wound up here.

As this is a fourth wall-style prompt, feel free to play any character you like for a brief visit to Beacon, but keep in mind that if you later decide to app them they will need to fit within the rules for appable characters. For situations involving characters previously in Beacon returning for this mini-event, any memory of previously being in Beacon is allowed but will automatically render the threads non-canon (or some strange hallucination).

Questions? Feel free to ask on the December Gameplan.

rat nicholas

Did you all forget the Rat King? Because the Rat King hasn't forgotten you. Just as you're picking up the monthly supplies and greeting the strangest round of newcomers yet, there's a thundering of paws, shrill little squeaks, and the glint of torchlight on sharp teeth. A wall of rats overtakes the town, threatening to trample anyone and anything in their path.

But if you manage to stay out of their way, you'll see a strange sight - the Rat King, body composed of hundreds of fleshy, furry rat bodies writhing and swaying, is being pulled on a large piece of scrap metal across the snow. And as they swarm, the King tosses gifts to and fro! Try not to get bonked in the head by a shrunken apple doll, or trip over a very pungent cheese rind. Among the strange rat-favored junk you might even find a few treasures in the form of actual sweets, or some lovely spirit-made garlands, though you might have to beat the rats to the good ones!

Q&A

WHAT WOULD YOU GIVE
TO SEE THEM AGAIN

WHAT WILL YOU GIVE
TO KEEP THEM SAFE

KNOWING YOU GET NOTHING IN RETURN?

[The words appear on the network - sometimes when you go to make a post, sometimes interrupting what you were trying to type.

Maybe this place is just like that, or maybe there's someone looking for an answer?]

shivers

The brutal cold drags its teeth across your flesh with every biting gust of wind. You just want to get indoors, to safety - but the snow spirals thickly around you, blocking all vision, reflecting light from your lantern onto shards of ice that seek to dig in to any part of your exposed skin. You close your eyes, cover them with a hand, while branches crack and snap in the forest around you.

When you open them, you aren't where you were, and you are very alone. But the tablet in your pocket still has a signal. Maybe you can ask for help? Maybe someone knows how to guide you back?

(This is a mini-version of our upcoming event, Shivers (I've Got 'Em)!)

TEST DRIVE MEME #04

Hello and welcome to the The Next Night's test drive meme for October-November! Thanks for your interest in this GPSL! Applications will be judged on a first-come, first-served basis.

While you're here...

  • Take a look at our rules and faq pages to familiarize yourself with The Next Night.

  • Next Night currently operates on a rolling app system, meaning you can app whenever you are ready! There is a player cap of 60 players. The taken page reflects the current number of players.

  • TDM threads can become game canon if both players wish. If the situation isn't something that could happen in-game, you're free to chalk it up to some strange hallucination, a shared dream, or other mysterious circumstance.

  • Note that top-leveling is not limited to new characters! If current players wish to post a starter, they are welcome to do so. They are welcome to make posts in the main comms for TDM events as well. Please note, however, that actual plot clues or happenings will not occur in TDM prompts.

TRICK OR TREAT. TW: GORE

For reasons unknown, the spirits of Beacon seem to love spooky season. And as October slowly pulls down the temperature, a few spirits get right into the swing of spooky. It's never too soon to celebrate Halloween!

Some of the celebrations are obviously a treat for residents. Spirits will leave festive surprises at doorways, under pillows, in drawers and under beds. What kind of surprise? Well, it depends. Candy is a staple, though it's not likely to be any kind anyone's ever heard of. McMillain's Candy Earlobes, anyone? Other things like pumpkins, spiced drinks, intricately cut and carved masks could be hidden around.

Less playful and more disturbing are the spirits determined to provide tricks. They're just as likely to slip something somewhere unexpected, but the item in question is a lot less fun and festive. Things like broken glass, bloody teeth, and locks of hair. Definitely not what anyone was expecting when they slipped into bed, or glanced under a table.

That's not all, either — some little tricksters seem determined to give a fright, hiding any place dark enough to hide them. And in a place that's always dark, that's practically anywhere you look. The spirit will pop out from your closet, under your bed, around the corner, inside the drawer you left something in, even falling in front of you from nowhere with an ear-piercing scream.

Last but not least, the pranksters have managed to leave trick supplies around the shops and the rest of town. Perhaps a blanket that only leaves you colder, a salve that burns instead of heals, canned food that makes the pit in your stomach a little deeper. It seems any trick item is bound to have the reverse effect of what was intended — and much like Cinderella, they will disappear without warning.

SCREAM IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT TW: BODY HORROR

Out in the dark, it's hard to note at first... vines curving down the streets, up walls, along paths. Eventually, the massive influx of pumpkins is impossible to ignore, as they dot and litter and scatter all over everything. And no amount of clipping or pruning seems to help, the determined plants will just grow back and in deeper fervor.

It seems fairly innocent at first, even nicely festive. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to last, as the plants don't seem to be particularly friendly. The pumpkins seem to have faces, when you look out of the corner of your eye. It's like they're staring, watching — but investigating doesn't show anything but a normal plant. Strange...

When the moon is high in the sky over Beacon, vines snag at feet and ankles. At first it seems a natural consequence of overgrowth, but as the vines tighten and drag into a vice, it seems more intentional. Spirits made of vines come to life, and they are determined to draw anyone they can catch into their fold. Smothering in vines and lives, the plants attempting to trickle into mouths and under skin. Slipping, sliding, slithering. Slowly taking a person over until nothing is left behind and all are one, combined. Without fire around to combat them, strength and anything sharp might be your only hope of breaking free. Or failing that, someone close enough to hear you scream before the vines curling around your throat kill the sound in your throat.

DEARLY DEPARTED.

Bonfire Square and its surroundings have once again become a temporary cemetery. The walkways, the open spaces, the riverbank, even perhaps the trees themselves now bear memorials the people who once died and now reside here. Some are shrines, others simple markers; perhaps yours is a grand mausoleum. Some have names and dates, some may not, but each is distinct. And as you walk past, you are drawn to them - drawn to place a small gift or token, or one of the last late-blooming flowers growing under the trees. In fact, the compulsion to visit these graves and leave something behind is awfully hard to resist.

When you do, you are drawn into the final moments of the person whose death the shrine marks. You experience it through their own eyes and feel it as if it is your own.

As if this wasn't difficult enough to bear, you realize this must mean somewhere in town your own death is on display. Will you let others visit freely? Will you guard your grave and its secrets? Will you try to destroy it? If you do, another will emerge elsewhere - it soon becomes obvious that trying to remove them is futile. You are, after all, really, permanently dead. No amount of wishing or fighting can change that now.

Feel free to decide how your character's grave, shrine, marker, altar, or other memorial looks, and be sure to describe what others will see when they visit!

TEXT PROMPT

At this point, you may have accumulated a lot of treats (so to speak) from the spirits. A few days into this and after the spirits have had some time to learn what the residents of Beacon prefer as far as their offerings go, the network updates with a post:

hello! we have a game if ur interested in more treats. you give three stories: two real, one lie. if someone guesses the lie they get to keep candy. everyone gets candy but the guesser gets more. enjoy!!!

They're good on their word when it comes to this - after you share your two truths and a lie, at least one piece of candy appears at your side. There may be a few more depending on how juicy your stories get, whether or not they are real.

ARRIVAL: A WATERY GRAVE

Slowly, your surroundings come into focus. You can hear the soft lap of waves on a beach. The air is warm and humid, and somewhere not too distant is the murmur of conversation. A wave breaks and races up the beach - and it's cool, and very wet, and that's when you realize you're lying face-down on the pebbles, soaking wet. And aside from the lantern just ahead of you, which is thankfully out of the water's reach (so far, anyway) and a few dancing lights in the distance, everything is dark.

Wherever you were before, however it is you died, you've woken up somewhere new. But you might want to get moving fast. The next wave might reach a little farther and put out that lantern, which seems to be your only nearby source of light at the moment. What's more, you swear that when the water raced back into the lake, you felt it grasp at your clothing, at your ankles, at your feet, and try to drag you down with it.

The longer you wait, the stronger each little wave pulls. Try to dive under, and you'll find your eyes covered with hands, your torso wrapped with long, flexible arms. The lake laughs as it tries to drown you. Hopefully someone sees you struggling.

IN A CARNIVAL WITH SIGHTS TO SEE

Once you've made your way off the beach and acclimated to your new surroundings, you'll find you've arrived at a very fortunate time - there's a carnival that's been set up for the residents of Beacon. You'll find all the trappings of your typical carnival - booths for cotton candy and funnel cake, various rides (including a roller coaster and a ferris wheel).

Beyond the rest of the festivities, there lies a Fun House, which holds a foreboding air around it, though there's still something somewhat alluring about it, even as you're warned away by spirits. If you ignore them and start heading inside in spite of that, you'll notice things are fairly ordinary at first - a little creepy, with its flashing lights and eerie music, but that's to be expected in a fun house, isn't it?

As you continue down the mirrored hallways, however, you may start to notice that your reflections aren't behaving as they should - instead of moving with you, they appear to be staring at you. As you start reaching the end (or what you think is the end, at least), you start hearing movement behind you, as if something's trying to get closer. You whirl around, trying to find an opening between the panels of glass, and come face to face with your doppelgänger, who begins to chase you as you try to find your way out.

[This is a miniature version of our upcoming event, Cotton Candy Hearts. Feel free to create and control your own spirits as needed!]

network prompts

SONGBIRDIFY

For characters that are musically inclined, they are likely happy to know that a music app is preloaded on every device. Songbird has a huge variety of music, from many different worlds.

There is a slight blip in the system, however, as the app has suddenly started pre-sharing songs. Hey, check out my favorite song on Songbird! The pick might be the character's favorite, to the T... or even one that would be their favorite, if they'd had an opportunity to listen to it. Or, it can be the silliest, most ridiculous song known to man. Either way, it's going to play all the way through, no closing the app or turning it off.

Is it a surprising pick? Did you just have to listen to 3 minutes of rhythmic chanting? Perhaps a song about bidets? Maybe you like that song too? Might as well chat about it!

MIRROR MIRROR

There's a strange post on the network, with a garbled username and title. Clicking onto it provides a video feed. Who is on the video feed? Well, funny you should ask. It's you.

There's nothing you can do about the doppelgänger, that swans a little closer to the camera with an eerie smile. That's all they seem to do, breathe quietly and stare directly through the screen, endlessly. For hours.

The only thing on the tablet that seems to function is the chat feature. Maybe you can ask yourself some questions? Or just see if anyone else can see the monstrosity that smiles unblinkingly back at you. Maybe warn them that shadow isn't actually you... especially as they reach for a sharp hunk of mirror from beside them and finally disappear from the screen.

TERROR UNDER THE LAKE.

Emergency lights flare red as the Helix Station's alarm system futilely warns you and all around you to evacuate to the submarines in the hangar. The system was designed in case of a hull breach, or an assault by the Wild Hunt, who seek to hasten the end of life in this world and bring it to its inevitable closure. Hallways ought to be automatically shut off; sealed and pressurized against the threats outside to allow time for the Night Market, the inhabitants of the station, to escape.

The system was not designed to handle this sort of threat.

Word passed quickly through the intercoms - the containment in the portal room did not hold. The creature from beyond the stars was stronger than expected. The test subjects in their chambers broke loose, and now hell has descended on the Helix Station. In order to survive, you need to get up the stairs, and through a long maintenance corridor out to the submarine hangar - but the spirits that have come pouring down that hallway are ravenous and deadly. Behind you, the control center for the station's entire power system could be of some use in at least managing the situation, but some idiot barricaded himself inside, leaving you and everyone around you with only one real option: you'll have to fight for your lives and make it up the stairway - or find somewhere to hide and wait it out, and hope that help is on its way.

This is a miniature version of our event Beyond the Sea. Unlike the official event, there will be no mod-run exploration. Feel free to create your own spirits to fight, and to escape to the hangar bay or to die trying - only for your character to awaken in Beacon and find it was all a very vivid hallucination.

I SCREAM YOU SCREAM.

So, all that stuff happening in the Helix Station... pretty bad! The Vendor really feels for them. But there are other important things to worry about. For example, July 19th is International Ice Cream Day! And they have to be Ready.

The Vendor rolls their cart, which honestly rolls a bit wonky after everything that's gone down lately, to the middle of the park near the Bonfire. From there, the determined spirit tries to hand out as much ice cream as possible. They are peddling some new flavors, with sadly are lacking labels. Some flavors seem pretty straight forward by the looks of things, though characters won't know if they have earwax tobacco, BLT, or chocolate licorice until they taste it. Whether it's served in a cup or a cone, there's all sorts of flavors, and half the fun is the surprise!

That said, hawking ice cream all day and night... it's a lot of work! Occasionally, the vendor will scuttle to whoever is nearest, scoop extended. They are on break, and expect that the stand keep on scooping in their absence. You're up to the task, aren't you? Remember, the customer is always right!

network prompts

WHAT'S THE UGLIEST THING INSIDE OF YOU?

In the middle of the night (or close enough to it, who can tell in the dark?), an odd post appears. Trying to look at the user posting results in garbled nonsense, whatever it says is completely unreadable. The post itself seems to be a live feed of the Helix Station portal room, though it is so dark it is impossible to see what lingers in the dark. However, characters can hear some distant noise. Oddly enough, the noises manage to fill anyone that hears it with dread, anxiety, and even a sense of hopelessness.

If they listen too long, they feel compelled to confess something. The darkest thing they hold in their heart, whatever it is, they can't keep it in any longer. Maybe it's a comfort that on the network, maybe it won't be heard...

MISFIRE.

It seems as if the tablets and the network are all out of sorts, with half the crew down in the Helix station. The result? Messages are flying all out of order, and going to unintended recipients. Worse than that, the order and message itself seems to be getting scrambled.

This is your classic misfire prompt. Feel free to have fun with it, and let the message get as scrambled or as weird as you want!

TEST DRIVE MEME #01

Hello and welcome to the The Next Night's test drive meme for May-June! Thanks for your interest in this GPSL! In an effort to streamline our application process and avoid future confusion between incoming and existing players, we do not have a reservation period. Applications will be judged on a first-come, first-served basis.

At this point in time, characters have not yet ICly unlocked the ability to bring in new people. However, we hope that will change in June! As soon as we set a date for applications to open, we will post an update to the OOC community as well as to plurk.

While you're here...

  • Take a look at our rules and faq pages to familiarize yourself with The Next Night.

  • Note that we will have an application cap of 20 apps for new players for this upcoming round only, and that the game has a player cap of 60. In future months we expect to limit this to 10 apps per round. An accurate count of current players will always be available on the taken page.

  • TDM threads can become game canon if both players wish. If the situation isn't something that could happen in-game, you're free to chalk it up to some strange hallucination, a shared dream, or other mysterious circumstance.

  • Threads with new arrivals must ICly take place after the mechanism for bringing in new characters has been re-enabled in order to be kept canon. We understand this makes keeping track of dates a bit tricky and may require some timey-wimey handwaving but please try to keep this in mind when deciding if a thread can be canon or not.

  • Note that top-leveling is not limited to new characters! If current players wish to post a starter, they are welcome to do so. They are welcome to make posts in the main comms for TDM events as well. Please note, however, that actual plot clues or happenings will not occur in TDM prompts. In addition, any threads from the TDM will be forward dated to when these mechanics are restored.

Thank you again, and we hope you'll choose to join us!

log prompts

EMERGENCY LANDING.

You've arrived.

Where, exactly? Well, that's quite hard to say. All around you is darkness. Even the stars above seem dimmed, as if it were possible to turn down the brightness on the sky. The only light immediately apparent is a lantern placed directly beside you. The handy-dandy tablet also provides light, but not enough to help much. Seems like you're going to have to find your way in the darkness.

Whether you find yourself in a dusted, rusted old amusement park, a spectacularly creepy abandoned orphanage, or what seems to be a museum with a very abrupt water feature in the middle of it, it's very clear you're not where you were when you closed your eyes. If you look back, what do you remember? Your death could be vivid, complete with the injuries that brought it, or a distant memory that almost seems like a dream. Either way it sticks to the back of your mind, whether you want it to or not.

And it might not be the best of ideas to worry about how you died or how you got here alone in the dark. Because turns out, maybe you aren't so alone after all. It might be a feeling, a crawl up your spine. Or sounds, bumps and wheezes and scratches hidden in the dark. Or it might be eyes, shining out in the shadows. It might be a good idea to start running, and hope you aren't the only one that found yourself stranded in this strange place.

Whatever you do, make sure you bring that lantern with you. Diverting too far from it makes you feel faint, and pushing past that feeling is not advised.

Turns out, it's not just new Beaconites that are turning up all over the place. The automated system is doing its best, but, there's some kinks to work out. The good news is, there's supplies coming into Beacon after almost two months of nothing! The bad news is, the supplies are showing up all over the place, with no rhyme or reason.

There are blankets and clothing items scattered on the dilapidated track of the Euthanasia coaster. There's a pile of food in the midst of the mostly destroyed sculpture garden, almost looking like an artistic statement on consumerism. Need some new tools? Hope you like climbing, because they seem to be precariously balanced in the branches of trees. There's a fax machine settled by the Bonfire, and nobody really knows what that's about.

Whatever it is you find, it's all helpful things that the residents of town could probably use. Though, admittedly, it'd be more helpful if it were in a place it could be used. Just like cargo off the ferry, it'd be a good idea to haul all this stuff from its landing place to the store, or wherever else it might be helpful. Or for those feeling less charitable, just grab what looks good and squirrel it away. Surely nobody is around to mind that you're helping yourself to more than your fair share!

As a final warning — tread with caution. Because with everything appearing at relative random, the next place it appears could be directly above you. And nobody wants to be under a pile of building materials when it ultimately lands.

KATAKLYSMOS.

All around you are signs of a devastating flood. Debris is still washed up against trees and buildings, walls have been knocked over, roofs caved in, and there's even a massive sinkhole in the Town Hall. Sandbags and trenches decorate the salvaged buildings.

And to the forest spirits, this seems to be cause for celebration! Are they excited that everything flooded? Are they just trying to cheer people up? Is this some festive holiday they've adopted from previous Beacon residents? Hard to say. But little pop-up booths reminiscent of a street market start to take shape around town, made out of collapsed homes and downed trees. The spirits offer snacks and drinks (probably pilfered from whatever was left of the sorry supplies, so think sliced spam and Tang), and "souvenirs" of people's ruined personal belongings that had washed out of their homes.

The best part, though? Water-based activities, fun for the whole family! Yes, the spirits are running around with buckets full of water to dump on everyone! Congrats, you survived the flood, here's more water! Watch out - if they can't find buckets they might just steal your shoes or hat and fill those with water instead!

As with most forest spirit prompts, feel free to NPC them yourselves - they're of slightly above animal intelligence and will come up with inventive ways to get you soaking wet when you least expect it.

network prompts

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES.

So you've found yourself in Beacon's eternal darkness. Well done! One of the first things most do here is check out the folding tablet they arrived with. On opening it, a prompt requests that you enter a network username.

But the instant you hit "OK", the screen redirects you to a welcome app. Which seems like it should be a good thing! But whether you select that you'd like it to be read aloud or if you would rather read it yourself, it seems to be a completely glitchy, bizarre mess. Parts are barely readable, but some parts look perhaps intentionally altered. Surely this isn't how the people of Beacon intended to welcome you, right?

Once it finishes, or once you manage to close out of it (a challenge, perhaps, since finding the right button on the screen to touch is difficult - the X shifts, the screen gets covered in static, and what is that sound) the network opens, prompting you to read the latest posts or make a post of your own.

WHISPERS IN THE DARK.

It's late. Or it feels late, it's always hard to tell in Beacon. Something pulled you from sleep, or whatever you were working on. A whisper, just nearby. A familiar voice, quiet and distant, and getting increasingly louder.

After some investigation, it becomes apparent the voice is coming from the tablet. There's a cryptic post, asking simply Do you hear me? And any time that particular post is pulled up, the voices won't stop.

The voices are distinctly ones that seem familiar. Maybe someone you've met in Beacon. Maybe someone you knew before then. Maybe it's someone you shouldn't be able to hear at all, and yet, you do.

There's no chance at actual conversation, though — the voice is simply asking if it can be heard. Softly, at first. A tinge confused, in some cases. The confusion escalates and is tainted by panic, as the voice keeps calling for an answer, an acknowledgment, that seems impossible to give. Even as the voice begs to be heard, please, please just say you can hear me, even as it fades into screams of frustration or terrified tears, no amount of response seems to break through.

The comments are open — maybe you can get your answers that way?

Post a toplevel for your character. If you'd like, include songs you already have on their playlist (if you make playlists), or general preferences for genres or lyrical themes if you don't.

Reply to other people with suggestions for music that could fit their character or your CR with them.

Don't be like Mulaney, have your character confess their sins/traumas/ridiculousness. The rules are simple:

✔ Post with your character. This is your thread for as many 'Never have I ever' statements you'd like to make!
✔ Under your own thread, reply to yourself ICly with a statement of something your character has never done.
✔ Post as many 'nevers' as you like, but each 'never' should be it's own comment string, under your character's thread.
✔ Other characters reply to whichever 'nevers' they like, drinking or not drinking as appropriate.
✔ Optional rule: If you drink, you have to explain the situation in which the 'never' occurred!
✔ Another optional rule: Forced honestly is okay, if you have a character that wouldn't talk/share anything.
✔ Threadjacking is encouraged! Particularly if it's to make fun of someone for their answer/drinking.
✔ HAVE FUN PEOPLE

TEST DRIVE MEME #9

Hello and welcome to the In the Night test drive meme for March! Thanks for your interest in our game! In an effort to streamline our application process and avoid future confusion between incoming and existing players, we will no longer have a reservation period. Applications open on March 22, and will be judged on a first-come, first-served basis.

While you're here...
  • Take a look at our rules and faq pages to familiarize yourself with the game.
  • Note that we have a (current) application cap of 15 apps this month for new players, as the game has a player cap of 70.
If current players wish to post a starter, they are welcome to do so. They are welcome to make posts in the main comms for TDM events as well. Please note, however, that actual plot clues or happenings will not occur in TDM prompts.
  • If you plan to apply, please keep in mind that we do require at least one sample thread on the application to be from our TDM (though it doesn't need to be the current TDM).
  • If you haven't already, please take a moment to look at our announcement regarding changes to the application cycle, which involves information concerning the TDM!
  • You're welcome to use the provided prompts or come up with something on your own, but we do ask that all threads take place in our game's setting.

Thank you again, and we hope you'll choose to join us!

DANCING QUEEN (cw corpses)

When the ferry chugs up to the dock, its speakers are crackling with a happy song. What a fun way to bring in all the newcomers! Except... goodness, what's that terrible stench? The ferry docks and lowers its gangway as per usual, but the ship is quiet. No newcomers flock to the deck to disembark, and instead, the faint sound of buzzing flies can be heard over the breeze.

Boarding the ferry quickly reveals the source of the flies: decaying bodies, dozens of them, are littered throughout the ship. Some lie in bunks and could be asleep if it weren't for the rot, and others are strewn throughout the cargo hold and the deck. There are no lanterns among them, and there aren't any signs of fighting or struggle around the ship. Inspecting the bodies (if anyone seriously wants to do that) won't yield any definitive answers in terms of cause of death, but, oh. Though it's difficult to tell at first glance due to the decay, these bodies... They're residents of Beacon.

Maybe you find your friend or yourself or, oh, there's Rastus! And Robin! The gang's all here, albeit disgustingly—and Dancing Queen crackles over the speakers. Welcome, welcome!

—but before the ferry departs again, the corpses start to move. Moving about the ship, someone might first hear a sigh, or a sputter, or a little laugh, and maybe it could be brushed off as a trick of the mind until the bodies stand, hoisting themselves up with whatever limbs they have left, and drag themselves toward the deck. One by one, they slip clumsily over the railing and back into the lake, but not before they drop their disguises and slowly contort back into their usual forest spirit bodies (source).

Ugh. Frickin' spirits.

WELCOME TO OUR GAME: INTO THE DARK

In spite of the strange occurrences starting off the month, there's still work to be done in Beacon. Or perhaps it's precisely due to this that Rastus calls for the attention of anyone who will listen as they pass by his station at the bonfire. All but shoving a torch in your hand, he requests that you place it around one of the many locations that could use a source of light! A lot of new places have been discovered recently, after all.

In the event that you choose to choose to play with this prompt as game canon, please remember to report where you choose to place a torch on the item request page so the setting can be updated accordingly! For incoming players, this can be reported retroactively!

These efforts would be a great service to the community at large; Rastus reminds everyone that while the bonfire is a finite resource, it's still a resource that's meant to be utilized.

IF YOU DIE IN THE GAME YOU DIE FOR REAL

Not long after the ferry shows up with, uh, no people and a whole lotta corpses (that turn out to be forest spirits playing a very uncool prank), Robin makes a post to the network!

Oh holy god uhhhh OK so no idea what's going on with the ferry this month, wow. Data from the portal is saying nobody new came through, so... nothing to worry about!!! Probably!! I really don't know anything more than you guys right now but I'm gonna get in touch with Dr. Solis. She'll have a better idea of what's going on than me. I'll get back to you all as soon as we figure out what's up.

In the meantime..........!!! I thought it might be fun to play some games to get our minds off stuff? How about hangman! Here's how to play if you don't know!

She attaches a little set of instructions for any characters not in the know. Fun stuff!

But, uh oh. If you get a letter wrong, you'll notice it's getting just a bit more difficult to breathe... Is the air particularly heavy today? Allergies, maybe? No, the feeling only gets worse as the game continues, each incorrect guess tightening an invisible noose around your neck.

The only way out is through, it seems, as nothing provides any relief save for winning a game. But what happens if you lose...?

(If asked, Robin also has no idea what's up with that. Heck! Maybe it's the lanterns acting up again? In any case, the weird hangman curse will resolve itself within a day or two.)

PARTICIPATION FOR CLOWNS

All at once, a notice arrives in everyone's inboxes. It appears to be some sort of strange attempt at a bingo card! It would, potentially, be a mystery as to who crafted this and, well, exactly what it's supposed to mean, were it not for the underlying message that accompanies it.

HELLO! HELLO? HELLO HELLO. ALL BRING CARD TO GET GIFT FOR ALL! YES! ONTO BODY LIBRARY GIFT IT GOES! THANK A MUCH!

The real problem here being, of course, that the librarian's apparent game is a bit, well, difficult to understand. Well, it's possible that it won't require any stringent rules. Ultimately, those who bring in a bingo card that has a row of marks in any particular fashion will receive a free gift compliment of the spirit as a way to promote the library. There might be some fabric missing where the shirt has been bitten into, but, hey, nobody's perfect.

Hey, Luna here! We were discussing on discord how it would be neat if we had a list of everyone's lanterns. I was a loser and made one because why the hell not? You're not obligated to list yours if you don't wish to, but I wanted to allow people who aren't on plurk or discord to have a chance at it as well.

I only added what was on the taken list and the first batch of people who responded to the taken before it got added into the taken list, so if your character is not listed here, feel free to add them!

You can find the list here!

CAKE BY THE OCEAN

It's a brand new year, and with it, a brand new...you? Well, you are dead, but there's still plenty of ways that you can embrace the spirit of starting fresh, especially when it seems that the forest spirits have their own traditions that they're eager to share! If you've only just arrived, you may find yourself pelted with loaves of bread and accosted with noisemakers, or if you're a seasoned Beaconite, maybe you're wearily unsurprised to find strings of onions being placed around various doorways. Just another day in the afterlife. Best to go along with it, even if some of these practices seem to be somewhat chaotic. It's never a good idea to make the spirits mad, after all, and especially not when they're trying to show you...some sort of semblance of good will, you think. For the most miserable of souls, at least you can be comforted in the knowledge that it should all be over before the day is out.

This is a miniature version of the festivities present during this month's intro log!

I CAN'T FEEL MY FACE WHEN I'M WITH YOU

Winter has made its way to Beacon. It's fortunate that plenty of snow gear has been made available at the general store, so this is a great time for those with little-to-no experience with genuine snow to get out there and draw some angels or build forts for some playful snowball fights! At least...it is, at first. Linger too long and you'll find yourself caught in the middle of a raging blizzard that seems to have swept in out of nowhere. In an instant things seem to go from cold to freezing, and the need to get back inside where there's safety from the elements is pressing. Fortunately, you aren't alone. It might not be your usual residence, but more than one of you have tumbled into the same shelter, and will probably be stuck in there until the worst of the storm passes. No time to get to know each other like the present, right? Gotta break the ice somehow (haha).

network prompts

RUN BOY RUN

The changes in the weather isn't the only thing that residents old and new need to keep weary of. While a great many of the forest spirits remain generally friendly, traveling alone comes with its risks. There's always the possibility that you may encounter a creature that's less inclined to let you pass it by unscathed. And so it goes for you as you venture out into the trees with your lantern and torch in hand. Whatever reason you had for starting out alone, and whatever got you to this point, you've had to take shelter from a very, very displeased spirit. Maybe it has a body not meant for climbing, and you've scaled high up into a tree that it won't let you down from, or maybe you've taken shelter inside of a structure that it's too big to squeeze itself into. Whatever the case, it's clear that your pursuer isn't giving up the ghost (haha), and you'll need to contact someone for some form of help to get yourself out of this.

1000 FORMS OF FEAR

It's a normal day in Beacon...which means that something inconvenient at best and terrifying at worst must be just around the corner. Whether or not you're on edge about the relative calm, it doesn't seem that anything weird is happening...until you try and post to the network. No matter how many times you try, the message you intend to write erases itself. As if someone else has hacked into your tablet, a new message re-types itself in front of your eyes. One of your greatest fears or greatest regrets announces itself for all to see, and there's no getting rid of it. All attempts at getting rid of it are fruitless, and it doesn't seem that you can back out of the new post window now that you're here. Your only option now is to hit send. But, hey, your fellow residents are a pretty understanding lot. Maybe they won't hold whatever it is against you. Maybe you can explain it away. There's always lying, too, if you want to go that method of covering your tracks.
