TEST DRIVE MEME #5

TEST DRIVE MEME #5

Hello and welcome to the In the Night test drive meme for October! Thanks for your interest in our game! Reserves open on October 20, and applications open on October 22.

While you're here...
  • Take a look at our rules and faq pages to familiarize yourself with the game.
  • Note that we have a reserve cap of 20, and a (current) application cap of 10 apps this month for new players, as the game has a player cap of 60. An accurate count of current players will always be available on the taken page.
  • TDM threads can become game canon if both players wish. If the situation isn't something that could happen in-game, you're free to chalk it up to some strange hallucination, a shared dream, or other mysterious circumstance.
  • Note that this is not limited to new characters threading with characters already in-game. If current players wish to thread out the TDM prompts as canon events, they are welcome to do so. They are welcome to make posts in the main comms for TDM events as well. Please note, however, that actual plot clues or happenings will not occur in TDM prompts.
  • If you plan to apply, please keep in mind that we do require at least one sample thread on the application to be from our TDM (though it doesn't need to be the current TDM).
  • You're welcome to use the provided prompts or come up with something on your own, but we do ask that all threads take place in our game's setting.

Thank you again, and we hope you'll choose to join us!

log prompts

MAMMA MIA

The town is quiet, the forest spirits behave business-as-usual, Rastus doesn't know what's up. Whatever's going on, you'll have to figure it out for yourself.

And you will, though the hallucinations are subtle at first: objects moving when they shouldn't, people's proportions looking just a bit off, voices in an empty room, and so on. Is it just your mind playing tricks in the darkness? Might be! As the days go on, the hallucinations are harder to ignore, no matter how much you may wish to wave them off as flukes. What's wrong with everyone's faces? When did all the howling start? Who do you hold onto when the world drops out from under you? And those hands...

While you might know it can't be real, it certainly feels real. But at least it can't last forever... Right?

This prompt is a mini version of the game's Bury a Friend event.

GIMME! GIMME! GIMME!

Although the month is already well underway, residents of Beacon will notice a brand new shipment being delivered to the general store—only this one comes via the forest, as a small legion of spirits quickly drop off crates of boxes at its doorstep before scampering back into the woods. Hopefully nobody is riding too hard on hoping for further rations or supplies, because opening them up quickly squashes any notions of a full month's restock. Instead, it looks like each crate is bursting with costumes! Coming in all shapes and sizes to fit anyone of any age or decree, there’s plenty to choose from. Something scary? Magical? Clever? Or maybe even a bit on the sultry side? Dig deep enough, and you’re sure to find something to suit your tastes, props, accessories, wigs and all!

If nothing else, surely you can find an alternate use for a bit of spare fabric in your size, but what's the harm of having a bit of fun? But, oh, be careful if you're playing dress-up while the hallucinations from the event are in play... These costumes might just have a funny effect on you. 🤔!

network prompts

S.O.S.

The morning is interrupted by an alert. The text, which helpfully converts itself to automated speech when opened, reaches every inbox across Beacon, refusing to disappear until acknowledged. The problem? The username it comes from is glitched and unreadable, and all attempts at responding directly appear fruitless. The message is simple, three words:

SOS. SEND HELP.

There's nothing that seems to be able to be done about it, but with the earnestness in which it appears, maybe it would be wise to discuss it with the other residents. Isn’t there something you can do, even to track down the source? Maybe that will help you better put it from your mind.

TAKE A CHANCE ON ME

The longer you stay in Beacon, the clearer it is that you’re here for the long haul. And, on that note, the clearer it is that this place is going to need a lot of work to meet your standards. Obviously there isn’t much that can be done about certain things, like the state of lighting, or some of your potentially missing powers, but there are a lot of things that would certainly improve your personal quality of life. And for that matter, maybe some of your ideas would be agreeable to others, as well.

Whether you’re here to call for the establishment of a club, a new business, or even some kind of monthly therapy circle, the best way to get your message across is to turn to the Network and give your pitch. Whatever skills you may be lacking in the organization of this project, there’s undoubtedly someone out there who can provide. What are you waiting for? No time like the present to start collecting signatures!

Mama Mia - cw for allusions to drug use

[ There are hands scrittering across the walls. Grasping. ]

That is not a pleasant experience.

[ Senka is currently sitting at the bar, making good headway at finishing a bottle of red wine. She's a young woman, though she looks older, and her expression is both weary and oddly determined. Currently she's wearing a battered jacket covered in patches and a battered pair of pants, tucked carefully into heavy work boots. In contrast to her workman's appearance, her hair is long and loose, hanging over her face.

She snaps her fingers, gesturing to the seat next her. ]

Sit. Sobriety is so boring.

[ She prefers her hallucinations to be self-induced. Therefore she plans on getting very drunk. But, in the meantime, she's going to enjoy her wine. ]

Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!

[ Senka has found a truly glorious hat and has no intentions of letting it go. She balances it on her finger and spins it around, admiring the shine of the feathers by the light of her lantern. ]

I had no idea death would be so fashionable.

Wildcard

[ Hit me! ]

callada: (intento saciarte de mi)

Gimme

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-18 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh damn that's a cool hat. Rosinante is absolutely jealous. Sure, all right, it's very pirate, but if he's learned anything at all in the past four years, it's that his brother has doomed an entire kingdom and probably ultimately the world, and pirates sure do know how to experiment with fashion.

So. Two very important facts.

He's made this discovery while trying to shove his feet into a pair of really fantastic boots, but he'll absolutely pause for that hat.]

Whoa. What a find! Yeah, this is actually the best we've seen in months, I dunno where it all came from-

[Well, at least he'd almost finished his sentence when his instability caught up to him. He teeters backward, one foot halfway into one boot, and thunks onto the floor.]
o2gone: (004)

[personal profile] o2gone 2019-10-18 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
A man of taste, I see.

[ Senka puts the hat on her head, running her thumb along the brim. Who is she going to be today, in this company? There are too many unknown factors, potential threats, and it really won't do to seem gentle. So she'll play the gangster, she decides, and gives the man a knife-thin smile. There's very little in her eyes. She's learned how to go blank when people look at her. It's a gift.

Besides, if she's seen as anything, she wants to be dangerous. Thus far she hasn't seen anyone wearing Peregrin colors or the Commander's favored armor, but that might not mean anything. It's possible someone is hiding in plain sight just like she is, and Senka has no intention of dying twice. Not when she has so much work left to do. ]

Is this a special occasion, do you think?
callada: (recuerdos de su condición)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-18 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
[At least now he has the leverage he needed, maybe. He props the heel of his boot against a shelf and gives a good shove with his foot, and manages to force it on. It'll probably stretch, right? Wouldn't do to have only the one pair of shoes since he's still been wearing the ones he came here with this whole time. These will really have to be broken in before he can wear them much, but he doesn't have plans beyond sticking close to town for at least the next week.

Anyway, he looks over at the woman and shrugs.]

More clothes is a special occasion in itself. It's all so much more varied than what we normally get, too! All solid-colored, plain stuff. But other than that, I have no idea. Maybe someone wanted to throw a costume party.
o2gone: (015)

[personal profile] o2gone 2019-10-18 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Is that so.

[ So this isn't the usual fair, but something special added in along with the regular supplies. Some variety to keep things interesting, though to what end? Avoiding boredom, most likely.

Idle hands, as they say.

Senka's had time to look over the town, take a vague stock of the supplies. It's been years since she's been anywhere planetoid, but she knows how to handle inventory anywhere. There's enough to keep everyone happy, not just alive, but only for a certain amount of time. Let it go on without regular restocks and the times will start getting interesting, won't they?

Still, the clothing is question. She gives her hat another little prod. Is boredom so dangerous here?

And if so, to whom? ]

I do love a party. And in such style...tell me, do they throw parties often, in Beacon?

callada: (dress best in boldly-striped sweaters)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-18 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
We've had a few.

[Hold on, let's shove this other boot on - okay, nice. Very colorful, and will certainly get muddy pretty quickly, but he'll enjoy the color while he can. He hauls himself up unsteadily and tests them with a couple steps and yeah... they're tight, all right. He grimaces just a little at the fit. Hm.]

Usually thrown by us, though. Or, you know. A few of us, whenever someone wants to. There's no "they" going around throwing parties for everyone that I've seen. You mean the spirits?
o2gone: (009)

[personal profile] o2gone 2019-10-18 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
More of a general question, really.

[ She takes a step back, crossing her arms. ]

I suppose I get suspicious with ghost stories.

[ There's usually some nasty truth hidden underneath them all. ]
callada: (Cool Dude TM)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-18 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, we're all ghosts here. No need to worry too much.

[It's so hard to get a read on new folks. He's taken to coming across as casual, easygoing, maybe a little simple just because it tends to put people at ease more frequently. And here, there's really nobody to hide from, nobody to work for or against, so it truly does get easier day by day to just be a civilian again. He doesn't have to spend every day acting a role.]

The real question is, how are you going to find a top that coordinates with that hat?
o2gone: (002)

[personal profile] o2gone 2019-10-18 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you never know. I've heard so many stories in my time and you would never believe how they'd end. What wild things they'd claim.

[ It's entirely possible this is an elaborate fever dream, or a cortical implant gone haywire. The Commander's been rumored to do things like that, with special projects or especially hated enemies. Senka hadn't counted herself among that number, but things change. The rules, the alliances, the debts. The only people she trusts in the wide, evil universe are her brothers, and they aren't at her side.

Caution is God, in that case. Caution, and potentially brutality if she means to avoid a second death. The first was painful, if indeed it happened, and she doesn't like the idea of repeating it.

She gives him a vague smile, flicking at the peacock feather. ]

With persistence, of course. I couldn't hope to match those shoes, but perhaps I'll come close.
callada: (me abandonó sin avisar)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-19 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
[Fair enough, but stories are stories and he tends to find much more use in things he can verify. Still, he'll file that away. Could be fun to ask about over drinks sometime.

For now, they can both indulge in the brightest bit of fashion Beacon has seen since his arrival. He offers a smile, then bends down to sort through the box.]

Maybe the key will end up being forgetting about matching, anyway. Just go wild. What the hell do you suppose this is?

[he asks as he straightens up, holding out a sagging, bulky outfit in varying shades of green. Looks like it has two lobes, joined at the - hip? Are those supposed to be where legs go?]
o2gone: (004)

[personal profile] o2gone 2019-10-19 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ Senka purses her lips, giving the outfit a once-over. ]

I really can't say. But it could be cut apart for the fabric, if you were so inclined.
callada: (recuerdos de su condición)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-19 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's not really my color.

[So let's toss that one aside. He lifts up another thing, something shimmery and silver, and frowns at it, then looks over at her.]

You know anything about sewing, though? Lotta people in town could benefit from a tailor.

[He could use one in particular. Nothing ever fits quite right. Seems whoever packs things for the ferry doesn't usually take people his size into account.]
o2gone: (Default)

[personal profile] o2gone 2019-10-19 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
A little. Not enough to make something from scratch, but...

[ She shrugs, running her hand over something cool and shimmery. ]

Enough to be useful.

[ It's always good to be useful. Means people think twice about making her dead. ]
callada: (stop and savor the cigarettes)

[personal profile] callada 2019-10-19 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Might have to bother you for some alterations, then. Not of this stuff, but I've only found a couple pairs of pants here that fit, and they're both too short. Is that the kind of thing you can manage?

[Hell, maybe he could even take lessons. He can do some of the very basics himself, enough to patch a sail, and probably enough to add length to a pair of jeans if he really sat down and tried it. But it would probably come off as awfully clumsy for day to day wear, and maybe she knows a few techniques to make things easier.]

GIMME

[personal profile] catholicisms 2019-10-18 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
( Matt, even with his super senses, has no idea how amazing that hat is. it's kinda sad. at any rate, he doesn't seem to be inclined to fight her for it. )

Usually what ends up at the store is pretty far from fashionable, ( he warns, because yes, he's been missing his tight-fitting lawyer suits, IS THAT SO WRONG?!?! he's picking through the costumes carefully, and notably he is doing more feeling than looking. he lifts up a particularly small and adorable one. ) What is this? Some sort of tree?

( he's not critiquing the construction, he really has no clue. he can feel the fabrics and sense the shapes but the color and details? completely lost on him. )
o2gone: (013)

[personal profile] o2gone 2019-10-18 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh? That's a shame.

[ Senka gives the hat another fluff. She doesn't often wear flashy things. No point in it, not when she takes such care not to be noticed in the first place. Her brothers are the ones who take point and they certainly aren't here.

Still — ]

I believe it's a pineapple.

[ She takes a step closer, head tipped to the side. She hadn't paid the man much mind earlier, but now she's curious. The way he moves, how he touches the thing with his hands...

Hmm. ]

Is it difficult for you here? Being blind, I mean.

[ It's a guess, though one she feels confident of. ]
catholicisms: (114)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2019-10-18 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Pineapple. ( having a mandrake be another form of a plant seems a bit on the nose, but Matt does notably tuck his find under an elbow and keeps fishing. he'll put it down as a maybe. beggars can't be choosers, and that he's found anything small enough to fit the spirit is already remarkable. a pineapple is better than putting a tree baby in a tree costume, but... barely.

and with that he's back to sorting, at least mildly looking for anything in the pile that seems like it could be wearable outside of a costume party, though again, he's a bad judge of that. someone is going to have to check his work. he can tell he's gotten her attention, and while it's impossible to say why until she asks, he can guess. because it's usually his blindness that people seem to want to talk about.
)

I'd say it makes it easier. I'm used to the dark. ( plenty of the other residents of Beacon struggle with acclimating, struggle with getting around, struggle with just the atmosphere of constant blackness. Matt dealt with all those things a long time ago. )
o2gone: (Default)

[personal profile] o2gone 2019-10-18 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen pictures of them.

[ Never eaten one, though. Never held one either. Fresh fruit is hard to come by and Senka's brothers never did manage to steal a ship big enough to grow their own. One day, maybe. When they have enough tech and guns to keep what they take.

She moves closer, still watching him. Wondering. She's met blind men before. Not many, but a few. They were always worth knowing, too. Good listeners. Good at catching secrets, too. People trust a blind man. They sense weakness, whether it's real or not, and let their guard down. And when their guard is down —

Well. ]

A good way of looking at it, I suppose. It can be hard to accumulate. The lack of sunlight, for one....

[ She hasn't been down on a planet for years. It's been even longer since she's seen true sunlight. ]

But I'm being rude, I apologize. Hello. You can call me Senka.

[ She smiles, even though he won't see it. It shows in her voice and impressions matter, after all. She hasn't figured out who she's going to be to these people, but it won't do at all if they think she's weak. That cannot be allowed. If she means to be anyone, she'll be a threat — someone to approach warily, if at all. And a person like that would smile ever so gently when greeting a stranger. Not warmly, but not showing teeth either. ]
catholicisms: (24)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2019-10-18 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
( don't come for his secrets like that, damn!!! Matt does take intense advantage of the fact most people let their guard down around him, and say things they might not to someone else... and do things they think he can't see. he's aware of a lot more than he ever lets on and he certainly doesn't forget anything he learns, even if he doesn't always make obvious use of the information.

he tilts his head, a slight frown at the odd and offhanded mention that she's only seen pictures of pineapples. Matt hasn't seen a pineapple in a good twenty years, though that's just because he's blind. not because there's been a shortage of them. he wonders where she's from, that the most she knows of a pineapple is a picture.
)

Hard to get used to the dark, and just finding your way in it. I've had plenty of practice with both. ( he's not going to say he's used to eternal darkness at this point, because that implies some kind of acceptance of it — like he doesn't miss it, like he's at peace with what he can't experience anymore. he's does, and he's not. he's not used to it, but he's got plenty of experience.

it's true, you can hear a smile. Matt hears hers, and he smiles back. he has a nice smile — maybe a hair practiced, if you look for it.
) Senka. ( he repeats her name, just to get a sense of it, before he offers his own. ) Matt. You just got in, I'm guessing.
o2gone: (004)

[personal profile] o2gone 2019-10-18 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course.

[ She rocks back on her heels, looking him up and down. He's decently dressed, considering the circumstances. Carries himself well, too. Not arrogantly, nothing quite so obtrusive, but with the sort of care that looks casual to an outsider. Understandable, considering his situation. It doesn't do to bump into people, after all. Not unless you mean to steal from them. Though a blind man would be uniquely positioned to do that, wouldn't he?

Matt seems more and more like a man worth knowing, in that light. And he has a good smile. Nice and polite, and — perhaps — just a tad too polished. ]

It's very nice to meet you, Matt. And I did, yes.

[ It took a knife and several hours of dying, but of course she doesn't say that. ]

Admittedly, I never thought much about the afterlife. But I must say, I appreciate the fashion. It's all so....dramatic. Does this sort of thing happen often, Matt?
catholicisms: (132)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2019-10-18 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
( for a blind guy, he does dress well. even in a place with barely any light, where you could get away with dressing down a little. technically, this is dressed down for Matt — he left all his fitted suits in hell's kitchen, and he's had to make do with what he can scrounge at the store. mostly sweaters, button ups, and yes, he's still got a tie. he manages to look pretty well put together, especially for a blind guy.

funny how that works, right? don't worry too much about that, Senka, maybe someone is dressing him!!

he works idly as they talk, in a way that might make it seem like he's not paying her much mind. he is; he's painting a picture of her with what his senses can tell him. the way she watches him, gives him a once over he's probably not supposed to know about. she's trying to decide what she thinks of him, is his guess, which isn't completely abnormal. making an evaluation of a stranger is common practice.
)

You're the third group I've experienced incoming. ( he wonders how many more lost souls are going to be dragged into Beacon against their will. a troubling thought. he shakes his head, with a wistful laugh at her inquiry. ) Not generally. Most of the clothes that come in are more on the dated side. I think this must be some kind of riff on Halloween.
o2gone: (007)

[personal profile] o2gone 2019-10-18 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
To match the ghost stories, perhaps.

[ She always liked Halloween as a child. Less so as an adult, when she learned what people did once they put on masks. There's always something hiding behind the boogeyman. And now she's come to this place, the next step after dying. It wasn't what she expected, though Senka admits she never imagined what would come afterward. There hadn't seemed like much point, not when she could put the effort into staying alive. It worked right up until the moment it didn't.

And now the spirits in the woods have provided them with costumes. It feels like a game, though she's not certain of the point just yet. A distraction, perhaps.

She doesn't bother searching through the clothes anymore, and just stands there watching Matt. The intensity of her gaze might have worried a stranger, but he can't see and it shouldn't be an issue so long as she keeps her voice nice and light. ]

I was told supplies come on a regular schedule, but that the clothes were different. Are there other...unexpected things, that come with the cargo?
catholicisms: (121)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2019-10-19 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
( he doesn't make any appearance of being aware of the fact she's just... standing there and staring, though he Definitely Knows. it's odd, even for him, a guy pretty used to being stared at. whether they realized it or not, most people tended to stare at anyone with an obvious disability. usually it doesn't last quite this long, though — once they realize they're staring, most people tend to feel bad about it, and then look everywhere but him.

it makes him think she's not staring at him just because she's not used to being around a blind person, though exactly why? well, that he's not sure about yet.
)

Depends on how you mean. When I first got here, we arrived with a huge hoard of rats that ate everything in sight. So in that respect, on occasion. ( he hasn't witnessed a huge influx of unknown creatures since then, however. maybe that was a one time thing... one can only hope so. ) Among the supplies can be other items. Some that have been requested, some just seem to come. If you're hoping for something specific, you'll have to ask Rastus.
o2gone: (014)

[personal profile] o2gone 2019-10-19 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Did you really? Hmm.

[ That could have been a problem if the swarm got into the supplies. Or perhaps a warning from whoever is orchestrating this dance; stay on your toes. Though the name gets her attention quickly enough. ]

Rastus....that's a new name.

[ And one she's zeroed in on. It sounds like a smuggler or quartermaster, or perhaps both. Someone who knows how to get supplies. Someone worth knowing, in the end. ]

And are these requests granted?
catholicisms: (106)

[personal profile] catholicisms 2019-10-19 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
( they definitely did get into the supplies. food had been short that month... and it'd been short this month. food shortage isn't a new experience in Beacon, it's more the way they get there that seems to change. )

Usually. He's pretty upfront about what he can't get. ( Matt hasn't had any requests rejected, though he has had one land at the bottom of the lake... long story...........

he lifts another costume he's found. if she's gonna stare at him like that, she can at least be helpful.
) What on earth is this one?
