TEST DRIVE MEME #5

TEST DRIVE MEME #5

Hello and welcome to the In the Night test drive meme for October! Thanks for your interest in our game! Reserves open on October 20, and applications open on October 22.

While you're here...
  • Take a look at our rules and faq pages to familiarize yourself with the game.
  • Note that we have a reserve cap of 20, and a (current) application cap of 10 apps this month for new players, as the game has a player cap of 60. An accurate count of current players will always be available on the taken page.
  • TDM threads can become game canon if both players wish. If the situation isn't something that could happen in-game, you're free to chalk it up to some strange hallucination, a shared dream, or other mysterious circumstance.
  • Note that this is not limited to new characters threading with characters already in-game. If current players wish to thread out the TDM prompts as canon events, they are welcome to do so. They are welcome to make posts in the main comms for TDM events as well. Please note, however, that actual plot clues or happenings will not occur in TDM prompts.
  • If you plan to apply, please keep in mind that we do require at least one sample thread on the application to be from our TDM (though it doesn't need to be the current TDM).
  • You're welcome to use the provided prompts or come up with something on your own, but we do ask that all threads take place in our game's setting.

Thank you again, and we hope you'll choose to join us!

log prompts

MAMMA MIA

The town is quiet, the forest spirits behave business-as-usual, Rastus doesn't know what's up. Whatever's going on, you'll have to figure it out for yourself.

And you will, though the hallucinations are subtle at first: objects moving when they shouldn't, people's proportions looking just a bit off, voices in an empty room, and so on. Is it just your mind playing tricks in the darkness? Might be! As the days go on, the hallucinations are harder to ignore, no matter how much you may wish to wave them off as flukes. What's wrong with everyone's faces? When did all the howling start? Who do you hold onto when the world drops out from under you? And those hands...

While you might know it can't be real, it certainly feels real. But at least it can't last forever... Right?

This prompt is a mini version of the game's Bury a Friend event.

GIMME! GIMME! GIMME!

Although the month is already well underway, residents of Beacon will notice a brand new shipment being delivered to the general store—only this one comes via the forest, as a small legion of spirits quickly drop off crates of boxes at its doorstep before scampering back into the woods. Hopefully nobody is riding too hard on hoping for further rations or supplies, because opening them up quickly squashes any notions of a full month's restock. Instead, it looks like each crate is bursting with costumes! Coming in all shapes and sizes to fit anyone of any age or decree, there’s plenty to choose from. Something scary? Magical? Clever? Or maybe even a bit on the sultry side? Dig deep enough, and you’re sure to find something to suit your tastes, props, accessories, wigs and all!

If nothing else, surely you can find an alternate use for a bit of spare fabric in your size, but what's the harm of having a bit of fun? But, oh, be careful if you're playing dress-up while the hallucinations from the event are in play... These costumes might just have a funny effect on you. 🤔!

network prompts

S.O.S.

The morning is interrupted by an alert. The text, which helpfully converts itself to automated speech when opened, reaches every inbox across Beacon, refusing to disappear until acknowledged. The problem? The username it comes from is glitched and unreadable, and all attempts at responding directly appear fruitless. The message is simple, three words:

SOS. SEND HELP.

There's nothing that seems to be able to be done about it, but with the earnestness in which it appears, maybe it would be wise to discuss it with the other residents. Isn’t there something you can do, even to track down the source? Maybe that will help you better put it from your mind.

TAKE A CHANCE ON ME

The longer you stay in Beacon, the clearer it is that you’re here for the long haul. And, on that note, the clearer it is that this place is going to need a lot of work to meet your standards. Obviously there isn’t much that can be done about certain things, like the state of lighting, or some of your potentially missing powers, but there are a lot of things that would certainly improve your personal quality of life. And for that matter, maybe some of your ideas would be agreeable to others, as well.

Whether you’re here to call for the establishment of a club, a new business, or even some kind of monthly therapy circle, the best way to get your message across is to turn to the Network and give your pitch. Whatever skills you may be lacking in the organization of this project, there’s undoubtedly someone out there who can provide. What are you waiting for? No time like the present to start collecting signatures!

I've seen pictures of them.

[ Never eaten one, though. Never held one either. Fresh fruit is hard to come by and Senka's brothers never did manage to steal a ship big enough to grow their own. One day, maybe. When they have enough tech and guns to keep what they take.

She moves closer, still watching him. Wondering. She's met blind men before. Not many, but a few. They were always worth knowing, too. Good listeners. Good at catching secrets, too. People trust a blind man. They sense weakness, whether it's real or not, and let their guard down. And when their guard is down —

Well. ]

A good way of looking at it, I suppose. It can be hard to accumulate. The lack of sunlight, for one....

[ She hasn't been down on a planet for years. It's been even longer since she's seen true sunlight. ]

But I'm being rude, I apologize. Hello. You can call me Senka.

[ She smiles, even though he won't see it. It shows in her voice and impressions matter, after all. She hasn't figured out who she's going to be to these people, but it won't do at all if they think she's weak. That cannot be allowed. If she means to be anyone, she'll be a threat — someone to approach warily, if at all. And a person like that would smile ever so gently when greeting a stranger. Not warmly, but not showing teeth either. ]

( don't come for his secrets like that, damn!!! Matt does take intense advantage of the fact most people let their guard down around him, and say things they might not to someone else... and do things they think he can't see. he's aware of a lot more than he ever lets on and he certainly doesn't forget anything he learns, even if he doesn't always make obvious use of the information.

he tilts his head, a slight frown at the odd and offhanded mention that she's only seen pictures of pineapples. Matt hasn't seen a pineapple in a good twenty years, though that's just because he's blind. not because there's been a shortage of them. he wonders where she's from, that the most she knows of a pineapple is a picture.
)

Hard to get used to the dark, and just finding your way in it. I've had plenty of practice with both. ( he's not going to say he's used to eternal darkness at this point, because that implies some kind of acceptance of it — like he doesn't miss it, like he's at peace with what he can't experience anymore. he's does, and he's not. he's not used to it, but he's got plenty of experience.

it's true, you can hear a smile. Matt hears hers, and he smiles back. he has a nice smile — maybe a hair practiced, if you look for it.
) Senka. ( he repeats her name, just to get a sense of it, before he offers his own. ) Matt. You just got in, I'm guessing.

Of course.

[ She rocks back on her heels, looking him up and down. He's decently dressed, considering the circumstances. Carries himself well, too. Not arrogantly, nothing quite so obtrusive, but with the sort of care that looks casual to an outsider. Understandable, considering his situation. It doesn't do to bump into people, after all. Not unless you mean to steal from them. Though a blind man would be uniquely positioned to do that, wouldn't he?

Matt seems more and more like a man worth knowing, in that light. And he has a good smile. Nice and polite, and — perhaps — just a tad too polished. ]

It's very nice to meet you, Matt. And I did, yes.

[ It took a knife and several hours of dying, but of course she doesn't say that. ]

Admittedly, I never thought much about the afterlife. But I must say, I appreciate the fashion. It's all so....dramatic. Does this sort of thing happen often, Matt?

( for a blind guy, he does dress well. even in a place with barely any light, where you could get away with dressing down a little. technically, this is dressed down for Matt — he left all his fitted suits in hell's kitchen, and he's had to make do with what he can scrounge at the store. mostly sweaters, button ups, and yes, he's still got a tie. he manages to look pretty well put together, especially for a blind guy.

funny how that works, right? don't worry too much about that, Senka, maybe someone is dressing him!!

he works idly as they talk, in a way that might make it seem like he's not paying her much mind. he is; he's painting a picture of her with what his senses can tell him. the way she watches him, gives him a once over he's probably not supposed to know about. she's trying to decide what she thinks of him, is his guess, which isn't completely abnormal. making an evaluation of a stranger is common practice.
)

You're the third group I've experienced incoming. ( he wonders how many more lost souls are going to be dragged into Beacon against their will. a troubling thought. he shakes his head, with a wistful laugh at her inquiry. ) Not generally. Most of the clothes that come in are more on the dated side. I think this must be some kind of riff on Halloween.

To match the ghost stories, perhaps.

[ She always liked Halloween as a child. Less so as an adult, when she learned what people did once they put on masks. There's always something hiding behind the boogeyman. And now she's come to this place, the next step after dying. It wasn't what she expected, though Senka admits she never imagined what would come afterward. There hadn't seemed like much point, not when she could put the effort into staying alive. It worked right up until the moment it didn't.

And now the spirits in the woods have provided them with costumes. It feels like a game, though she's not certain of the point just yet. A distraction, perhaps.

She doesn't bother searching through the clothes anymore, and just stands there watching Matt. The intensity of her gaze might have worried a stranger, but he can't see and it shouldn't be an issue so long as she keeps her voice nice and light. ]

I was told supplies come on a regular schedule, but that the clothes were different. Are there other...unexpected things, that come with the cargo?

( he doesn't make any appearance of being aware of the fact she's just... standing there and staring, though he Definitely Knows. it's odd, even for him, a guy pretty used to being stared at. whether they realized it or not, most people tended to stare at anyone with an obvious disability. usually it doesn't last quite this long, though — once they realize they're staring, most people tend to feel bad about it, and then look everywhere but him.

it makes him think she's not staring at him just because she's not used to being around a blind person, though exactly why? well, that he's not sure about yet.
)

Depends on how you mean. When I first got here, we arrived with a huge hoard of rats that ate everything in sight. So in that respect, on occasion. ( he hasn't witnessed a huge influx of unknown creatures since then, however. maybe that was a one time thing... one can only hope so. ) Among the supplies can be other items. Some that have been requested, some just seem to come. If you're hoping for something specific, you'll have to ask Rastus.

Did you really? Hmm.

[ That could have been a problem if the swarm got into the supplies. Or perhaps a warning from whoever is orchestrating this dance; stay on your toes. Though the name gets her attention quickly enough. ]

Rastus....that's a new name.

[ And one she's zeroed in on. It sounds like a smuggler or quartermaster, or perhaps both. Someone who knows how to get supplies. Someone worth knowing, in the end. ]

And are these requests granted?

[personal profile] catholicisms 2019-10-19 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
( they definitely did get into the supplies. food had been short that month... and it'd been short this month. food shortage isn't a new experience in Beacon, it's more the way they get there that seems to change. )

Usually. He's pretty upfront about what he can't get. ( Matt hasn't had any requests rejected, though he has had one land at the bottom of the lake... long story...........

he lifts another costume he's found. if she's gonna stare at him like that, she can at least be helpful.
) What on earth is this one?
