TEST DRIVE MEME #03

TEST DRIVE MEME #03
Hello and welcome to the The Next Night's test drive meme for August! Thanks for your interest in this GPSL! In an effort to streamline our application process and avoid future confusion between incoming and existing players, we do not have a reservation period. Applications will be judged on a first-come, first-served basis.
While you're here...
- Take a look at our rules and faq pages to familiarize yourself with The Next Night.
- Note that we will have an application cap of 10 apps for new players, and that the game has a player cap of 60. An accurate count of current players will always be available on the taken page.
- TDM threads can become game canon if both players wish. If the situation isn't something that could happen in-game, you're free to chalk it up to some strange hallucination, a shared dream, or other mysterious circumstance.
- Note that top-leveling is not limited to new characters! If current players wish to post a starter, they are welcome to do so. They are welcome to make posts in the main comms for TDM events as well. Please note, however, that actual plot clues or happenings will not occur in TDM prompts.
- If you plan to apply, please keep in mind that we do require at least one sample thread on the application to be from our TDM (though it doesn't need to be the current TDM).
- You're welcome to use the provided prompts or come up with something on your own, but we do ask that all threads take place in our game's setting.
- As we no longer plan to have a bimonthly game-wide HMD meme, we require that all new applications going forward must have a HMD post somewhere on the journal and we will ask for this as part of the application process.
Thank you again, and we hope you'll choose to join us!

ARRIVAL: A WATERY GRAVE
Slowly, your surroundings come into focus. You can hear the soft lap of waves on a beach. The air is warm and humid, and somewhere not too distant is the murmur of conversation. A wave breaks and races up the beach - and it's cool, and very wet, and that's when you realize you're lying face-down on the pebbles, soaking wet. And aside from the lantern just ahead of you, which is thankfully out of the water's reach (so far, anyway) and a few dancing lights in the distance, everything is dark.
Wherever you were before, however it is you died, you've woken up somewhere new. But you might want to get moving fast. The next wave might reach a little farther and put out that lantern, which seems to be your only nearby source of light at the moment. What's more, you swear that when the water raced back into the lake, you felt it grasp at your clothing, at your ankles, at your feet, and try to drag you down with it.
The longer you wait, the stronger each little wave pulls. Try to dive under, and you'll find your eyes covered with hands, your torso wrapped with long, flexible arms. The lake laughs as it tries to drown you. Hopefully someone sees you struggling.

IN A CARNIVAL WITH SIGHTS TO SEE
Once you've made your way off the beach and acclimated to your new surroundings, you'll find you've arrived at a very fortunate time - there's a carnival that's been set up for the residents of Beacon. You'll find all the trappings of your typical carnival - booths for cotton candy and funnel cake, various rides (including a roller coaster and a ferris wheel).
Beyond the rest of the festivities, there lies a Fun House, which holds a foreboding air around it, though there's still something somewhat alluring about it, even as you're warned away by spirits. If you ignore them and start heading inside in spite of that, you'll notice things are fairly ordinary at first - a little creepy, with its flashing lights and eerie music, but that's to be expected in a fun house, isn't it?
As you continue down the mirrored hallways, however, you may start to notice that your reflections aren't behaving as they should - instead of moving with you, they appear to be staring at you. As you start reaching the end (or what you think is the end, at least), you start hearing movement behind you, as if something's trying to get closer. You whirl around, trying to find an opening between the panels of glass, and come face to face with your doppelgƤnger, who begins to chase you as you try to find your way out.
[This is a miniature version of our upcoming event, Cotton Candy Hearts. Feel free to create and control your own spirits as needed!]
network prompts

SONGBIRDIFY
For characters that are musically inclined, they are likely happy to know that a music app is preloaded on every device. Songbird has a huge variety of music, from many different worlds.
There is a slight blip in the system, however, as the app has suddenly started pre-sharing songs. Hey, check out my favorite song on Songbird! The pick might be the character's favorite, to the T... or even one that would be their favorite, if they'd had an opportunity to listen to it. Or, it can be the silliest, most ridiculous song known to man. Either way, it's going to play all the way through, no closing the app or turning it off.
Is it a surprising pick? Did you just have to listen to 3 minutes of rhythmic chanting? Perhaps a song about bidets? Maybe you like that song too? Might as well chat about it!

MIRROR MIRROR
There's a strange post on the network, with a garbled username and title. Clicking onto it provides a video feed. Who is on the video feed? Well, funny you should ask. It's you.
There's nothing you can do about the doppelgƤnger, that swans a little closer to the camera with an eerie smile. That's all they seem to do, breathe quietly and stare directly through the screen, endlessly. For hours.
The only thing on the tablet that seems to function is the chat feature. Maybe you can ask yourself some questions? Or just see if anyone else can see the monstrosity that smiles unblinkingly back at you. Maybe warn them that shadow isn't actually you... especially as they reach for a sharp hunk of mirror from beside them and finally disappear from the screen.

Shadow listened carefully without any prejudice. She hadn't offered any information that was any detriment to him or that she could profit from that he saw. ] This isn't Deerington? ...Or a place they sent us to?
[ His body was tense, fighting off from shivering. His knuckles were close to white with how they clenched the lantern in hand. Shadow didn't think about the cold as he gave thought to what she informed him. Life force? This gave all new meaning to what his mother used to say about his light. ]
no subject
Deerington? [ she's never heard the name before and the confusion is written on her face. ] I can tell you this isn't whatever that is, but as for whether or not they sent you here...
[ well, she can't really answer that, either. she's already mentioned that they're in the afterlife, beyond that she's not sure how where he was connects to where he is, but clearly that place had already sent him somewhere he wasn't supposed to be. she's about to continue, but then realizes how cold he is. ]
Well, first, let's find you some clothes. It'll probably be easier to talk if you're not worried about getting hypothermia.
no subject
Shadow shivered involuntarily again. He gave her a quiet nod, ready to follow where she went. ] I'd appreciate that. ...Even if hypothermia shouldn't be a concern under the circumstances.
[ How did that work? Could he get sick and die in the afterlife? What was the point of the carrying a life force?
There was one way of really telling if this had anything to do with Deerington; the tattoo should no longer be on the expanse of his back. ]
no subject
Come on, this way. [ she starts to head from the carnival grounds towards the landmark hotel; she'd been meant to meet with matthew but she's sure he'll understand the emergency once she sends him a message about it. ] What's your name?
no subject
[ His name left his lips with ease, wrapping his free hand around himself. Shadow looked around as they walked. Nothing stuck out. It was difficult to believe that she didn't know Deerington. This was how the town worked, dumping people from one existence to another. ]
no subject
she's become pretty adept at navigating these woods, so they reach the landmark before too long. the trek to the suite she shares with matthew is an even shorter trip, and she directs him to the bathroom. ]
I'll find you something. There should be a towel in the closet. In the meantime, if you can remember, tell me about what was happening before you ended up here. You asked about Deerington, what is that?
no subject
Shadow did as she instructed and set his lantern down in the bathroom to peel off his wet shirt and get a towel. The dry material felt welcome on his torso. ]
Deerington... it's a town that has the habit of suddenly taking people from their worlds then throwing them into different locations. [ He managed that without too much a strain on his voice, trying not to shiver. ] Ending up here wouldn't be a stretch.
no subject
What's the last thing you remember from there? [ it seems more tactful a question than 'how did you die?'. ]
no subject
[ He spoke while getting out of the rest of his clothes once Elektra had handed him the new set. After three years in prison, Shadow wasn't much for caring about a fashion statement. There was a lot of him to dry off after peeling off more wet clothes before getting dressed so he hadn't exited the bathroom yet. ]
...We sat there staring at each other for a minute. Neither of us were sure what was going on. It was a small space so I didn't have much leverage to try harder. Started to feel hard to breathe, more than just exerting myself and the heat. It was obvious what they wanted to do so I started confessing but the other person wouldn't. The last thing I remember was them unconscious before I ended up the same way.
[ Shadow could at least pull the sweats up on his calves and the sleeves up on his forearms since both were too short. They were also a little tight and didn't leave much to the imagination so he kept the towel in his hands in front of him. He'd hung his wet clothes over the shower rod for the time being then finally stepped out of the bathroom. ]
Is there a clothes dryer anywhere?
no subject
[ out of politeness, elektra averts her eyes when shadow's changing. the clothing is unisex, but while what she'd pulled for him was more suited to matthew's size than hers, this man's a bit taller. (and to be fair, she's not sure how well they would have fit him either; it's not as if she'd let him wear them.)
when he comes back out, she regards him with a slight nod. ]
Sorry your death was dependent on somebody else.
no subject
[ There was a heavy amount of bitterness at the question he posed, starting to believe that he already knew the answer. Where was his mother? Why was everything cloaked in darkness. He evidently hadn't lived up to the hopes his mom had for him. ]
no subject
Yes. [ her tone is solemn, even a little apologetic. she's been here long enough to come to terms with her death and has seen plenty of people come and go since her arrival, even dying once herself. but it's still a lot for a newcomer to realize, and she can recognize that. ]
no subject
[ Elektra wasn't wrong about him wanting answers over getting his laundry done. His body was tense, hands held the towel in front of him with tight fists. ]
no subject
Just another person unfortunate enough to get pulled here instead of wherever I was meant to go after death. [ it was resurrection to be used as a weapon for the people she'd died to avoid serving against the person she'd taken a killing strike for; between that and beacon she'd choose this place, even with all its miseries. ]
This is Beacon. There's some information on the tablet you should have found that can detail what this place is and why we were brought here more sufficiently than I can. I don't know if I'd call it Purgatory, since we've never been promised anything beyond this.
no subject
Shadow had stopped shivering finally. The tablet she mentioned had to be the strange electronics that he'd found in his jacket. It hadn't been like any phone or tablet Shadow had ever seen before, not that he had a lot of experience with technology. ]
What do we do here? Is there something we work toward? What's the point of all this?
no subject
[ she looks around, trying to figure out where his tablet might be, then shrugs and pulls her own out, showing the screen to him to show him how to navigate the network. ]
People commiserate in person, or on here. There's the occasional meeting to go over when something big's happened to share what we've learned.
