TEST DRIVE MEME #01

TEST DRIVE MEME #01

Hello and welcome to the The Next Night's test drive meme for May-June! Thanks for your interest in this GPSL! In an effort to streamline our application process and avoid future confusion between incoming and existing players, we do not have a reservation period. Applications will be judged on a first-come, first-served basis.

At this point in time, characters have not yet ICly unlocked the ability to bring in new people. However, we hope that will change in June! As soon as we set a date for applications to open, we will post an update to the OOC community as well as to plurk.

While you're here...

  • Take a look at our rules and faq pages to familiarize yourself with The Next Night.

  • Note that we will have an application cap of 20 apps for new players for this upcoming round only, and that the game has a player cap of 60. In future months we expect to limit this to 10 apps per round. An accurate count of current players will always be available on the taken page.

  • TDM threads can become game canon if both players wish. If the situation isn't something that could happen in-game, you're free to chalk it up to some strange hallucination, a shared dream, or other mysterious circumstance.

  • Threads with new arrivals must ICly take place after the mechanism for bringing in new characters has been re-enabled in order to be kept canon. We understand this makes keeping track of dates a bit tricky and may require some timey-wimey handwaving but please try to keep this in mind when deciding if a thread can be canon or not.

  • Note that top-leveling is not limited to new characters! If current players wish to post a starter, they are welcome to do so. They are welcome to make posts in the main comms for TDM events as well. Please note, however, that actual plot clues or happenings will not occur in TDM prompts. In addition, any threads from the TDM will be forward dated to when these mechanics are restored.

  • If you plan to apply, please keep in mind that we do require at least one sample thread on the application to be from our TDM (though it doesn't need to be the current TDM).

  • You're welcome to use the provided prompts or come up with something on your own, but we do ask that all threads take place in our game's setting.

  • As we no longer plan to have a bimonthly game-wide HMD meme, we will require all new applications going forward to have a HMD post somewhere on the journal and we will ask for this as part of the application process.

Thank you again, and we hope you'll choose to join us!

EMERGENCY LANDING.

You've arrived.

Where, exactly? Well, that's quite hard to say. All around you is darkness. Even the stars above seem dimmed, as if it were possible to turn down the brightness on the sky. The only light immediately apparent is a lantern placed directly beside you. The handy-dandy tablet also provides light, but not enough to help much. Seems like you're going to have to find your way in the darkness.

Whether you find yourself in a dusted, rusted old amusement park, a spectacularly creepy abandoned orphanage, or what seems to be a museum with a very abrupt water feature in the middle of it, it's very clear you're not where you were when you closed your eyes. If you look back, what do you remember? Your death could be vivid, complete with the injuries that brought it, or a distant memory that almost seems like a dream. Either way it sticks to the back of your mind, whether you want it to or not.

And it might not be the best of ideas to worry about how you died or how you got here alone in the dark. Because turns out, maybe you aren't so alone after all. It might be a feeling, a crawl up your spine. Or sounds, bumps and wheezes and scratches hidden in the dark. Or it might be eyes, shining out in the shadows. It might be a good idea to start running, and hope you aren't the only one that found yourself stranded in this strange place.

Whatever you do, make sure you bring that lantern with you. Diverting too far from it makes you feel faint, and pushing past that feeling is not advised.

Turns out, it's not just new Beaconites that are turning up all over the place. The automated system is doing its best, but, there's some kinks to work out. The good news is, there's supplies coming into Beacon after almost two months of nothing! The bad news is, the supplies are showing up all over the place, with no rhyme or reason.

There are blankets and clothing items scattered on the dilapidated track of the Euthanasia coaster. There's a pile of food in the midst of the mostly destroyed sculpture garden, almost looking like an artistic statement on consumerism. Need some new tools? Hope you like climbing, because they seem to be precariously balanced in the branches of trees. There's a fax machine settled by the Bonfire, and nobody really knows what that's about.

Whatever it is you find, it's all helpful things that the residents of town could probably use. Though, admittedly, it'd be more helpful if it were in a place it could be used. Just like cargo off the ferry, it'd be a good idea to haul all this stuff from its landing place to the store, or wherever else it might be helpful. Or for those feeling less charitable, just grab what looks good and squirrel it away. Surely nobody is around to mind that you're helping yourself to more than your fair share!

As a final warning — tread with caution. Because with everything appearing at relative random, the next place it appears could be directly above you. And nobody wants to be under a pile of building materials when it ultimately lands.

KATAKLYSMOS.

All around you are signs of a devastating flood. Debris is still washed up against trees and buildings, walls have been knocked over, roofs caved in, and there's even a massive sinkhole in the Town Hall. Sandbags and trenches decorate the salvaged buildings.

And to the forest spirits, this seems to be cause for celebration! Are they excited that everything flooded? Are they just trying to cheer people up? Is this some festive holiday they've adopted from previous Beacon residents? Hard to say. But little pop-up booths reminiscent of a street market start to take shape around town, made out of collapsed homes and downed trees. The spirits offer snacks and drinks (probably pilfered from whatever was left of the sorry supplies, so think sliced spam and Tang), and "souvenirs" of people's ruined personal belongings that had washed out of their homes.

The best part, though? Water-based activities, fun for the whole family! Yes, the spirits are running around with buckets full of water to dump on everyone! Congrats, you survived the flood, here's more water! Watch out - if they can't find buckets they might just steal your shoes or hat and fill those with water instead!

As with most forest spirit prompts, feel free to NPC them yourselves - they're of slightly above animal intelligence and will come up with inventive ways to get you soaking wet when you least expect it.

network prompts

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES.

So you've found yourself in Beacon's eternal darkness. Well done! One of the first things most do here is check out the folding tablet they arrived with. On opening it, a prompt requests that you enter a network username.

But the instant you hit "OK", the screen redirects you to a welcome app. Which seems like it should be a good thing! But whether you select that you'd like it to be read aloud or if you would rather read it yourself, it seems to be a completely glitchy, bizarre mess. Parts are barely readable, but some parts look perhaps intentionally altered. Surely this isn't how the people of Beacon intended to welcome you, right?

Once it finishes, or once you manage to close out of it (a challenge, perhaps, since finding the right button on the screen to touch is difficult - the X shifts, the screen gets covered in static, and what is that sound) the network opens, prompting you to read the latest posts or make a post of your own.

WHISPERS IN THE DARK.

It's late. Or it feels late, it's always hard to tell in Beacon. Something pulled you from sleep, or whatever you were working on. A whisper, just nearby. A familiar voice, quiet and distant, and getting increasingly louder.

After some investigation, it becomes apparent the voice is coming from the tablet. There's a cryptic post, asking simply Do you hear me? And any time that particular post is pulled up, the voices won't stop.

The voices are distinctly ones that seem familiar. Maybe someone you've met in Beacon. Maybe someone you knew before then. Maybe it's someone you shouldn't be able to hear at all, and yet, you do.

There's no chance at actual conversation, though — the voice is simply asking if it can be heard. Softly, at first. A tinge confused, in some cases. The confusion escalates and is tainted by panic, as the voice keeps calling for an answer, an acknowledgment, that seems impossible to give. Even as the voice begs to be heard, please, please just say you can hear me, even as it fades into screams of frustration or terrified tears, no amount of response seems to break through.

The comments are open — maybe you can get your answers that way?

[ he huffs at that, and looks for all intents and purposes like someone who knows he's made a grievous mistake and is now suffering the consequences. ]

You would approve of them, [ he mutters, because he has no doubts in his mind that cora-san wouldn't approve of literally everything about the straw hats... his own crew is at least less chaotic.

he falls silent with an almost grateful air, listening to the list of names and professions and characteristics; the only one who makes interest flash in his eyes is the scientist and the mention of cheating the system, but in the end, he asks nothing, and just nods.

he'll have to go over all the information later, he knows — no point trying to remember everything now when his mind is in no state to absorb it all anyway.

instead, he reaches for the mug, and not caring one bit that it's probably scalding hot. at least he only sips it, instead of downing about half of it at once as he feels like doing.
]

... is there something else we should worry about? [ aside from everything he's already mentioned, that is. ]
callada: (2hot2handle)

[personal profile] callada 2020-06-29 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, what, you want more than malicious spirits, world eaters, a river that's out to lure people to their doom, occasional catastrophic floods and the chance that you might just wander off into the darkness and get lost and die that way?

[It's a fair question, admittedly - best to know the full list of threats, after all! But it makes him laugh anyway. He takes his own mug, drinks from it without even considering the heat, and then spits a fountain of coffee right back out with a gasp.

Yep, that hasn't changed either.]
countershocks: (( 14 ))

[personal profile] countershocks 2020-06-29 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[ he shrugs. ]

Could be worse.

[ the sad thing is, he quite genuinely feels that way. and now that he knows all the threats, he can protect cora-san better.

... and then there's an impromptu coffee-fountain and law is yelling,
]

Be more careful! How do you still not remember it's hot?! [ he's the very picture of angry concern, which really is the way he shows his affection. clearly that hasn't changed, either. ]
callada: (your words are such unbearable agony)

[personal profile] callada 2020-06-29 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[Gotta protect him from his own hot drinks first.

Half of what remained in his mug spilled in the startle as well, it seems - but the rest is safely put back with the mug onto the counter as he winces hard around his own poor burnt tongue, then reaches for the rag at the sink and kneels down to mop up the spill.]

It just - I don't know! I didn't think about it.

[Just his dumb idiot self. Ugh. Once finished he dumps the rag in the sink to deal with later, and slouches back against the counter.]

You'll be pleased to know that I haven't set myself on fire once since arriving here, though.

[He tries a smug grin as if this is somehow an accomplishment and not the result of the fact that fire just can't actually catch like that here.]
countershocks: (( 03 ))

[personal profile] countershocks 2020-06-29 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[ no, he'll leave him to the mercy of the hot drinks and just scold him excessively. far more efficient.

law simply looks at him for a long moment before saying, flatly,
]

It shouldn't be something you need to think about.

[ he turns, and walks back to where kikoku still rests against the wall, sitting down next to it. he takes another sip of his coffee, very pointedly. ]

I'll be pleased when you go a week without tripping and falling down. [ the way he's saying that makes it very clear he might as well be saying when hell freezes over. ]
callada: (beware the silent observer)

[personal profile] callada 2020-06-29 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[He gives a snort, knowing full well that will never happen, then rolls his shoulders in something that's more a stretch than a shrug before mirroring Law's actions and taking his coffee cup back up. This time, though, he doesn't drink from it. He can wait. It's too hot.]

Aside from that girl Pudding, a lot of people here don't know much about our world. Of course, I don't know what she's told people. But for most of the last year here, all anyone's learned from me is that it's mostly water and islands, that the Marines try to keep pirates from terrorizing civilians, and that I'm a Marine.

[Which, you know. The last bit he's not thrilled about pointing out to Law again, but he nods to his lantern with its embossed MARINE emblem as if it had come straight off one of their ships.]

They know I protected you. They don't really know... what exactly I did. To them I'm a good, honest, loyal soldier. Just... so you know what my story is here.

[People don't like spies and traitors. Easy to be liked and trusted if he tells a simplified version of his life, that's all.]
countershocks: (( 01 ))

[personal profile] countershocks 2020-06-29 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[ perhaps surprisingly, there's not even a hint of anger or anything of the sort in his expression when marines are mentioned — he's accepted cora's indentity a long time ago.

for a moment, he thinks of dressrosa and the former fleet admiral, and he knows he needs to talk about that, but. not now. cora-san has cried enough for one day.
]

... good, [ he mutters eventually, because it really is. even if he's somewhat worried about cora's general competence with taking care of himself, this he'd never worry about. of course he's created the most suitable explanation and kept everything else from being found out. it makes sense, and it's smart. ]

I won't tell them anything you haven't told them. [ he sighs. ] I could lie about being just a doctor, but... if Pudding-ya is who I think she is, she'll recognize me. If others come here, if they're from the same time as I am, they'll recognize me too.

[ the downsides of being a former warlord. ] It doesn't really matter. If people distrust me because I'm a pirate... it just shows they're not stupid. Besides, my reputation can't be worse here. [ and he's not exactly looking to make friends. (when is he ever?) ]
callada: (Cool Dude TM)

[personal profile] callada 2020-06-29 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people here might think they know who you are once you say your name, or if you're seen with me. And that's fine. But you should know, there's been times here when people saw some of my memories, like when I died. Or just other things with you in them. And more recently a few people saw me find those bounty posters, and asked questions, and I didn't mind answering some of them.

[He gestures with his mug to the posters. Ah yes, didn't mind answering questions, more like it's hard for him not to gush a little about the beloved kid who he missed so much and who survived and grew up. Pirate or not, Law should have it easy here by association with himself, or so he hopes.]

Don't think anyone who knows me will give you a hard time. They'll probably be pleased to meet you, actually.
countershocks: (( 06 ))

[personal profile] countershocks 2020-06-30 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
[ there's a definite freeze to his expression there, because he generally hates people knowing, well, anything about him he hasn't decided to share — but that's not cora's fault, he assumes, the whole memory thing. at least it sounds like it wouldn't be something he'd voluntarily share.

and then —

by the end of it all, his expression has actually morphed from frozen discomfort to utterly horrified.

like he truly can imagine only a few things worse than people actually wanting to meet him.

he's used to people looking at him like he's a) crazy, b) dangerous, c) heartless, d) all of the above — not actually thinking that he's... you know. someone anyone should in any way be pleased to meet.

because he isn't. at all. which people should be aware of.

(in the end, in response, there's just. a long silence. sorry, cora-san, his thought process can be summed up as "does not compute" right now.)
]
callada: (never believed in reading the leaves)

[personal profile] callada 2020-06-30 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
[He lets the silence linger for a moment before cautiously - and this time safely - sipping at what's left of his coffee.]

Sorry. I figured you needed to be warned about that. But it's not - they still don't know much. Only what they saw. Cao Pi, you should know that he knows more. He saw a memory from one of the hospitals.

[If anyone gets that horror on Law's face, it's Rosinante, who has lived his life in constant fear that people will find things out about them he does not want them to know. By comparison, here there is really nothing to fear - he saved the life of a kid who was sick, protected him from his murderous criminal brother, and that's the bulk of what anyone is likely to have retained. With a tiny handful of exceptions.]

Things like that happen here sometimes. I guess that's one more thing to add to your list. It's not life-threatening, but it's not pleasant.
countershocks: (( 11 ))

[personal profile] countershocks 2020-06-30 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
[ for the moment, law seems to have forgotten his coffee entirely; it sits on the floor next to him, abandoned. he manages something like a shake of his head to the apology — he'd rather know than not — but then cora speaks of hospitals, and for a moment he looks.... alarmingly pale.

with effort, he forces his hands to unclench, counts to four, breathes. counts, breathes.

objectively, he knows it doesn't matter even if every single person here knew about it all. it would mean nothing to them.

but old habits are hard to break, and he's kept his silence on the subject for so long now.
]

... Life-threatening sounds better, [ he eventually says, and means it. ]
callada: (se siente bien estar aquΓ)

[personal profile] callada 2020-06-30 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
At least with life-threatening, you can do something about it.

[Which is to say he agrees, and is really and truly glad that Law didn't arrive sooner for some of the things he might have seen as a result. There are reasons why even though he empathized deeply with Law's plight as a child, he never offered his own struggles for commiseration. He'll keep that to himself.]

Unless some found memories of mine and didn't tell me about it, I believe only two people here know anything more than my "good Marine" cover story. You should know that, too. Minimus Ambus, who's a robot, about my height, you'll see him around. And Dr. Ingram, who I mentioned before. Both of them saw a memory of mine right after I met back up with Doflamingo and probably heard whatever my thoughts were through all of it. Minimus - I don't think he likes it, he's very black-and-white and focused on the law as he perceives it, but he didn't ask much and I don't know if he really put the whole picture together.

The doctor knows, and understands. But he's one of the only people here who I trust.

[And anyway, Rosinante has plenty to retaliate with if somehow Will starts spilling secrets. They're friends, but they have each other as mutual hostages if need be.]
countershocks: (( 02 ))

[personal profile] countershocks 2020-06-30 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[ exactly. and maybe he shouldn't be so surprised cora agrees — he thinks back to dressrosa, to doflamingo's monologue about his origins, and thinks, one more thing to the list of things to never talk about.

it's starting to be one long list.

again, he simply nods to the explanation, somewhat relieved there's not more trouble with it all.
]

At least there's someone. [ to trust.

he picks up his coffee again, speaking over the rim of the cup,
]

And if anyone appears to give you trouble for anything, they won't do that for long. [ read: he'll hack them apart, take their hearts, or separate their heads and stick them on top of nearby buildings for the spirits to take.

(look, he's very well-adjusted and not at all overprotective, what are you saying?)
]
callada: (I bet Doffy uses mascara)

[personal profile] callada 2020-06-30 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[Rosinante is constantly finding himself on a pendulum between solemn and elated. The struggle is, of course, partly amplified by how, when he closes his eyes, when he blinks, he still thinks of Law as a child. That angry teen, not even knee-high, wants to protect him? It should be the other way around!

But Law is his own man now and wields considerable power by nature of his devil fruit alone - he knows that as a fact, even if it's hard to fit it into his mental image of who Law is. Just means it takes him an extra second to figure out how to respond to statements like that one, as he looks over at Law with a somewhat bemused smile on his face.]

Well, same for you. I'm not expecting trouble from anyone here. Um...

[He really can't keep putting the question of Law's death off. They've both got their drinks, and this is something he needs to know. He just goes to sit back down on his bed first, then decides to phrase the question as tangentially as possible so as to give Law more freedom to explain in whatever way suits him best.]

So... What's with the cool outfit?
countershocks: (( 15 ))

[personal profile] countershocks 2020-06-30 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[ look, he was protected enough as a kid, it's his turn now! at least law is confident in the fact that he can just shambles cora away from immediate danger if he needs to, even if the only thing to switch with is himself.

he glances down at his clothes, as if he's forgotten what exactly what he's wearing.
]

It's the customary way to dress in Wano. If you want to blend in, clothes from the outside won't work.

[ and then, because he's not an idiot, he sighs. ]

Cora-san. If you wanted to know what happened, you could have just asked. [ but because he didn't — ]

Doflamingo was using Caesar Clown to create artificial devil fruits, SMILEs, that he sold to Kaido. I kidnapped Caesar and the Straw Hats destroyed the SMILE factory, so no more of them could be made. [ another sigh. ] I proposed an alliance to take down Kaido, but my real goal was always Dressrosa... but when it was over, there was still Kaido left. [ he's very careful to not say he never expected to make it out of dressrosa. ]

My crew got caught in Wano, so I made a deal, to set them free in exchange for me. I managed to escape, but that coward Hawkins called Kaido there.

[ it was either be imprisoned and disturb their whole plan and quite possibly cause others be killed trying to save him... or just die himself, provoke kaido into believing it was all his plan and thus underestimate the straw hats, and give strawhat-ya even more motivation to defeat kaido. with him dead, there's no way he'll ever forgive kaido.

it was between him living and possibly messing up their entire plan, the future of an entire country, and endangering the lives of his allies... or dying, and helping them win.

it wasn't really a choice.
]
callada: (beware the silent observer)

[personal profile] callada 2020-06-30 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[Yeah, sure, he could have bluntly asked. But there's so much he needs to know, and so much he needs Law to know, that the existing questions and information dumps already feel like a lot and he doesn't want to overwhelm him more than he already has. Doesn't want to bring up things that are painful. Maybe - maybe he was also afraid it would be too painful for himself to hear.

Rosinante didn't expect Law would just readily answer like that. Like it's some chain of facts, rather than the end of his own life. And the facts themselves are, quite frankly, horrifying. In his own time period, Doflamingo's plans for Dressrosa all still lay in the future. Being able to create devil fruit artificially was a pipe dream then, not reality. Doflamingo allying with Kaido was still a long shot and something he deeply does not like the thought of. The implications are staggering.

If he had only just been a little more cautious, maybe he could have prevented this. Law could still be alive, his brother could have been jailed long before Kaido saw the benefits of that deal, Dressrosa's people wouldn't have suffered...]

Law... What you did was incredible. I want you to know that. No matter how it ended, I'm so proud of you. Always.
countershocks: (( 05 ))

[personal profile] countershocks 2020-06-30 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[ perhaps it seems strange, the almost detachment that he speaks with, clinical analysis of events processing logically, to the ending point that was his death.

but to him, death had never been a stranger: his plan had always been to die in dressrosa. not one of his plans had him walking out alive. sure, he'd said he'd meet his crew after... but they wouldn't have let him go if he'd told them the truth. (he suspects bepo knew, anyway, but because bepo also knew he wouldn't rest until doflamingo's defeat, he didn't stop him.)

there was a definite difference between wanting to die and being prepared to die — his death was worth it when it was for a purpose. he'd thought it'd be to defeat doflamingo... it ended up being to defeat kaido.

something softens in his eyes at cora's words, but then he shakes his head to the no matter how it ended, because. no, you don't get it.
]

My crew is safe, and Kaido believes destroying the production of SMILEs was completely my idea. The Straw Hats will win, the Kozuki clan will return to power. They're capable of miracles... when those he [ and yeah, there's suddenly a he, unnamed but perhaps the newspapers cora has read make the identity obvious ] calls friends are hurt, he'll stop at nothing. Kaido will be defeated. The last of what Doflamingo has done will be wiped out.

[ he's 1000% sure of that. his death is the final blow in all the terrible things kaido has done that strawhat-ya has personally taken offense at; he'll stop at nothing to bring him down.

of course, nothing of his words gives away the fact he could have as easily been imprisoned... but perhaps it's possible to realize there's something dangerously planned in the way he speaks of the state of affairs after his death. or perhaps it's just a thought cora won't even want to consider.
]

[Perceptive by both nature and training, it's not too hard to put it all together even if he doesn't know every name and all of the context. The Straw Hat crew and its captain are indeed at least some he's familiar with thanks to their notoriety in the papers, and their relentless rampage through the seas is one that clearly has a lot of people very worried.

Except that, as he's beginning to see, that rampage that terrifies the World Government is one with its positives as well. Law trusts them to do the right thing and calls them friends. He'll allow them the benefit of the doubt because of that alone. It is more than a little disconcerting that Law has weighed the impact of his own death and found it to be a positive thing, but - well. Better than being in complete despair over it, maybe.

Besides, he didn't miss that the captain of the Straw Hats is another D.]

What's he like? The Straw Hat captain.

[ finally, a question that breaks the calm, matter-of-fact front he's been putting up all through this part of their conversation.

immediately, law scowls and, with irritation, answers,
]

He's the worst person I've ever met. [ wow, okay then. but what his "worst" means, in this case, is — ]

He never listens to anyone, he's annoying and selfish and does everything at his own pace! It's useless to talk to him about plans, because he doesn't listen and even if he does, he doesn't go along with them. He's stupidly cheerful and doesn't even think to care about danger! And have you ever heard of a benevolent pirate? Who goes around deciding people are his friends without asking for their opinion and then saves people and countries just because he's decided he likes some people in that country? What a disgrace!

[ it's.

a full-blown rant, with nothing but complaints, and yet.

cora probably knows him well enough to read between the lines, about he decided we're friends and that i'm worth saving even when i'd done nothing to deserve it, about he acts according to his own moral compass no matter the danger, about he's a good person.
]
callada: (at least I laugh at myself)

[personal profile] callada 2020-06-30 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh, to some degree he can sympathize with Law plenty, given the description. Someone like that would frustrate him plenty, too - mostly the selfish anarchy part, because that's what he already dislikes about so many pirates.

But the rest? Well, that's not so bad. Really not bad at all, in fact. He chuckles and sips at his drink.]

If you've set up a pirate to topple Kaido and have that much power at his disposal, I'm glad he's a benevolent one. There are worse people out there on the seas.

[And he's glad Law has people who will declare themselves his friends, anyway, because he can easily tell that Law never became the sort to seek them out himself.]

He's Vice Admiral Garp's grandson, [ he says, because it's kind of relevant information to a marine, and then his expression suddenly turns into... yeah, it is his certified troublemaker smirk. ]

He's going to be the Pirate King.

[ so you know. toppling kaido? just one small stepping stone on the way. ]

[The first statement earns a concerned frown. The second - more of a recoiling look of horror as Rosinante promptly chokes on his coffee, then manages to swallow it and grimaces.]

Pirate King?

[Look, he was raised in the Marines. It's not just a job, it was pretty much his whole life, so the very notion of anyone trying to reclaim Roger's old title (even if it's someone supposedly "benevolent") is kind of disturbing. A lot of blood has been shed in attempts to do just that over the years.]

Poor Garp.

[Is all he can think of to say to that, as he shakes his head. A hero of his caliber with a grandson determined to claim that ultimate badge of rebellion against the government? What a nightmare.]

Yes.

[ somehow, that one syllable is infused with incredible amounts of unholy glee — not least because he knows the entire world government keeps being in an uproar over strawhat-ya and literally nothing could please him more than the world government trying so hard to stop one pirate and constantly failing at it. ]

He declared war to the World Government over one of his crew mates, invaded Enies Lobby and got her back. He broke into Impel Down, and then out of there. He got into Marineford twice. The first time we met at Sabaody, he punched a Celestial Dragon.

[ look. there are reasons law puts up with the chaos that are the straw hats.

(still happy about the fact this is the person who looked at law and decided they were friends?)

[His shock only manages to increase with every word and by the end he's just staring in complete incredulity, eyes wide, pupils shrunken to nearly nothing as his mouth hangs agape. What the actual hell-

This Straw Hat fellow is clearly a whirlwind of pure and absolute chaos. A monstrous force of - of something he can't put words to. His knuckles around his now-empty mug are white, though he hasn't realized how hard he's gripping it.]

He - what? You're pulling my leg, right? How is he still alive?

[Despite his horror, he can absolutely see why Law would rather be on the same side as someone like that than against him. That's just pure practicality.]

As if that'd be a believable lie.

[ no one would ever be able to make this shit up.

a whirlwind of absolute chaos is about right, though... but useful chaos when you're allied with him, even if 99% of the problems law had before dying seemed to have to do with him.

and he knows the last question is probably rhetorical, and it'd be very easy not to say anything to it, but —
]

He would have died in Marineford.

[ that's all he says, though, because admitting out loud law ended up saving both him and jinbe is something he's very much not going to do.

anyway —
]

If no one's stopped him by now, they're not going to succeed in the future. [ hence, future pirate king. ] Even if the fleet admiral hates his guts.
