TEST DRIVE MEME #8

TEST DRIVE MEME #8
Hello and welcome to the In the Night test drive meme for January! Thanks for your interest in our game! In an effort to streamline our application process and avoid future confusion between incoming and existing players, we will no longer have a reservation period. Applications open on January 22, and will be judged on a first-come, first-served basis.
While you're here...
- Take a look at our rules and faq pages to familiarize yourself with the game.
- Note that we have a (current) application cap of 16 apps this month for new players, as the game has a player cap of 70. An accurate count of current players will always be available on the taken page.
- TDM threads can become game canon if both players wish. If the situation isn't something that could happen in-game, you're free to chalk it up to some strange hallucination, a shared dream, or other mysterious circumstance.
- Note that this is not limited to new characters threading with characters already in-game. If current players wish to thread out the TDM prompts as canon events, they are welcome to do so. They are welcome to make posts in the main comms for TDM events as well. Please note, however, that actual plot clues or happenings will not occur in TDM prompts.
- If you plan to apply, please keep in mind that we do require at least one sample thread on the application to be from our TDM (though it doesn't need to be the current TDM).
- You're welcome to use the provided prompts or come up with something on your own, but we do ask that all threads take place in our game's setting.
Thank you again, and we hope you'll choose to join us!

CAKE BY THE OCEAN
It's a brand new year, and with it, a brand new...you? Well, you are dead, but there's still plenty of ways that you can embrace the spirit of starting fresh, especially when it seems that the forest spirits have their own traditions that they're eager to share! If you've only just arrived, you may find yourself pelted with loaves of bread and accosted with noisemakers, or if you're a seasoned Beaconite, maybe you're wearily unsurprised to find strings of onions being placed around various doorways. Just another day in the afterlife. Best to go along with it, even if some of these practices seem to be somewhat chaotic. It's never a good idea to make the spirits mad, after all, and especially not when they're trying to show you...some sort of semblance of good will, you think. For the most miserable of souls, at least you can be comforted in the knowledge that it should all be over before the day is out.
This is a miniature version of the festivities present during this month's intro log!

I CAN'T FEEL MY FACE WHEN I'M WITH YOU
Winter has made its way to Beacon. It's fortunate that plenty of snow gear has been made available at the general store, so this is a great time for those with little-to-no experience with genuine snow to get out there and draw some angels or build forts for some playful snowball fights! At least...it is, at first. Linger too long and you'll find yourself caught in the middle of a raging blizzard that seems to have swept in out of nowhere. In an instant things seem to go from cold to freezing, and the need to get back inside where there's safety from the elements is pressing. Fortunately, you aren't alone. It might not be your usual residence, but more than one of you have tumbled into the same shelter, and will probably be stuck in there until the worst of the storm passes. No time to get to know each other like the present, right? Gotta break the ice somehow (haha).

RUN BOY RUN
The changes in the weather isn't the only thing that residents old and new need to keep weary of. While a great many of the forest spirits remain generally friendly, traveling alone comes with its risks. There's always the possibility that you may encounter a creature that's less inclined to let you pass it by unscathed. And so it goes for you as you venture out into the trees with your lantern and torch in hand. Whatever reason you had for starting out alone, and whatever got you to this point, you've had to take shelter from a very, very displeased spirit. Maybe it has a body not meant for climbing, and you've scaled high up into a tree that it won't let you down from, or maybe you've taken shelter inside of a structure that it's too big to squeeze itself into. Whatever the case, it's clear that your pursuer isn't giving up the ghost (haha), and you'll need to contact someone for some form of help to get yourself out of this.

1000 FORMS OF FEAR
It's a normal day in Beacon...which means that something inconvenient at best and terrifying at worst must be just around the corner. Whether or not you're on edge about the relative calm, it doesn't seem that anything weird is happening...until you try and post to the network. No matter how many times you try, the message you intend to write erases itself. As if someone else has hacked into your tablet, a new message re-types itself in front of your eyes. One of your greatest fears or greatest regrets announces itself for all to see, and there's no getting rid of it. All attempts at getting rid of it are fruitless, and it doesn't seem that you can back out of the new post window now that you're here. Your only option now is to hit send. But, hey, your fellow residents are a pretty understanding lot. Maybe they won't hold whatever it is against you. Maybe you can explain it away. There's always lying, too, if you want to go that method of covering your tracks.

"Alright." She walked over to the rug and took a seat across from here. Her lantern placed carefully next to her side before curling up her knees to her chest.
Warmth seeped into her limbs through the two coat layers and the reminiscence of Sora's body heat that he'd left behind. She slipped her hands into the coat, letting them warm against her sides as she met Sora's gaze and listened.
Her had heard her say her name but he still hadn't introduced himself. It made her uneasy but there was no running away from it. He was familiar, as if she'd been connected to him or someone very like him.
For a moment, she was silent. The house shook from the blizzard outside but she groped hopelessly for a way to phrase the thoughts spinning in her head. "Are you..." Naminé stopped and looked down at her feet before continuing. "Are you Sora?"
no subject
At least she seems warm now, almost flooded in his coat. It's nice to know that she's safe from the cold, at least.
When she asks the question, he opens his mouth almost immediately. Then closes it. He scratches the back of his head. "No. Yes?" He narrows his eyes at the ground, staring at her lantern, trying to put the pieces together. He's been thinking about it a lot, but none of the answers have been sticking well. "If... having memories and stuff from him isn't enough, then probably not. What I have feels real, but I don't know if that counts for anything." He's been uncertain about this for about a month now. He doesn't know who Naminé is, exactly, so he isn't sure if she'd necessarily have answers, either.
He looks up at her, nestled in those two big coats. This really is a lot to explain, even if they do have an entire snowstorm to wait out. He gets out his tablet, scrolling down the list of names in the directory, but doesn't really pay it much mind. It's open so he remembers to do something later.
"Maybe... it's better to save that part for later?" He smiles down at the tablet before setting it down again. He knows that his eyes scared Riku - it's better not to hold eye contact. "Have you been okay?" She died to get here, after all; he doesn't want to assume that she is okay.
no subject
Warmth blossomed in her chest and while listening to his words she somehow knew what to say. "No it's-" She leaned forward, her fingers curled against her chest as she continued. "It's okay if you aren't or if you remember only a little. You are you and I would like to know you too." It didn't matter if he was Sora or someone else. She was sure that he had a good heart.
"Let's be friends... okay?"
She'd heard his question but it'd slipped from her mind as the frantic rush of words found their way to her lips. There was so much that Naminé didn't understand but she knew that they didn't have to recognize each other to meet again. They would feel it in their hearts and her heart was speaking to her now.
no subject
"Is it okay?" It's a big question, the kind of big dangerous question he can't ask Riku anymore. "Can we still be friends? Even if I'm not the Sora you remember?" He isn't sure why, but little prickling sensations are flooding his eyes. Why is he being like this? "I just don't want to hurt you. Or lie to you. I think that'd be the worst thing I could do. I don't even remember why. Is that okay?"
no subject
"That's okay, isn't it? You aren't lying, if you don't know something. And even if things hurt, we'll be here to pick up the pieces."
Naminé hoped with all her heart that he might one day know her, even if that meant starting now. It was selfish but she didn't want to be alone. Even in a world where they were supposed to be dead. She'd do everything she could to help the people she cared about, even if they chose not to care about her in return.
no subject
And he comes back to her getting teary-eyed, and he realizes he's getting kind of misty himself. So he just grins, and then laughs, because that's what you do if the mood drops a little. Someone has to bring it back up, right?
"Aw, no." He sniffs, but he keeps smiling. He's so, so relieved. "Listen, Naminé, if you start crying, I'm gonna cry, and that'll just make you cry more, I think, and then I'll start crying more, and then we're gonna be sitting here in this really cold room with icicles all down our faces for hours and hours until the snow stops. What kinda hero would I be then, huh? Making you cry like that over being friends." He rubs his face. No more tears! "We both gotta stop. We're friends now, right? Nothing to cry about."
no subject
She wasn't subtle but Naminé was trying her best.
"Being friends is a good thing. I'm happy. I am." She sounded more assured of that fact the longer she spoke. It wasn't that Naminé wasn't happy but she wasn't used to having or controlling her emotions. She didn't have the time or practice that most her age had.
"Thank you. Um... what should I call you?"
no subject
"Um..." He fidgets a bit. "I was... trying to not call myself Sora, but uh. Even when I was just trying to explain who I was, that got hard. Like, you know, I'd tell people about Donald and Goofy, or the islands, or all the places I'd been - see? The places I've been." He grins. "It's too hard. If... a realer Sora comes along, he can have his name back, but Sora's what feels real. You can call me that."
no subject
It didn't matter what Sora said or how many other Sora's arrived after him. The boy sitting in front of her now would always be Sora.
It was likely easier for Naminé. Sora had forgotten her and she was convinced that any iteration of Sora wouldn't recognize her. It was odd. She'd search so long for a friend, for someone to love and care about her the way Sora cared about Kairi. Her feelings were complicated in a sense, with everyone from the Castle, but right now she was happy. It was like a flower blossomed in her chest and her entire body felt lighter. Naminé tried to recall a similar feeling but couldn't.
no subject
"Whoa... you know, I never thought about it that way before! You're right. That makes Goofy one of a kind." He'd been kind of worried about meeting other people from what he remembers as "home", but having Naminé here, smiling and telling jokes as though she'd just come back from a trip from a long way away, but not long or far enough for the distance to separate them is... much kinder than he'd been expecting.
He doesn't know who Naminé is, but he knows he likes her. It's like how caring for Kairi and Riku is more and less than memory and feeling and more and more like just a part of who he is. Naminé seems to be the same way. It's caring as easy as breathing, or blinking, or falling asleep when you're warm and safe. It's surprisingly uncomplicated. Sora likes that.
This place is a little less kind than this feeling, and definitely not the type of place he'd wanted Naminé or Riku or anyone to be, but at least they aren't alone in the dark here. There's the bonfire, though, and their lanterns. And lights in their hearts that couldn't go out, of course. As far as Sora was concerned, they were set.
Set. Oh! "That's right! Naminé, where are you staying? After the snow stops, we need to take you there." He frowns in determination. "I mean, you probably just got here, so maybe we should stop by the general store to pick up more winter clothes for you, but after that, I'll walk you wherever you need to go."
no subject
She laughed and felt the warmth in her chest lift her.
This was what it was like to have friends.
It felt amazing.
"Oh? I'm not sure where I am staying. It's in the town. Where are you? Can we all stay together?" She didn't know a lot about the town yet but she wanted to explore... maybe after the snow storm. "I might need another coat but I don't have money." Naminé had nothing but her lantern and her white dress.
no subject
"Well, you don't need to worry about money. You can just pick things out for free at the general store! It's all secondhand but there's a lot of it. We'll find something that's warm and looks good on you." That's the easy part. If there's anything nice about Beacon, it's that most things seem to be free. Comes from continuing on after the apocalypse, after all.
But. Sora looks down at his own lantern - starshaped, daylight yellow, sitting right next to Naminé's little birdcage. His hands grip into his sleeves.
"We should... Take you to where Riku's living." That seems like the right thing to do. Riku always liked Naminé, he thinks. They would remember more of each other. "I won't be able to stay, but he's got a nice cabin not too far from the bonfire. I live about an hour away from Beacon, but I come to visit every once in a while. We can meet up when I do." And that's a perfectly positive way to spin it! That's even more motivation to make sure Beacon and and the Landmark downtown stay connected. With Naminé as motivation, he'd definitely work extra hard to make sure the two communities don't float apart.
