Hello and welcome to the In the Night test drive meme for June! Thanks for your interest in our game! Reserves open on June 20, and applications open on June 22.

Note that we have a reserve/application cap of ~~20 apps per month~~ (this has been waived for the first month!).
TDM threads can become game canon if both players wish. If the situation isn't something that could happen in-game, you're free to chalk it up to some strange hallucination, a shared dream, or other mysterious circumstance.
Note that this is not limited to new characters threading with characters already in-game. If current players wish to thread out the TDM prompts as canon events, they are welcome to do so.
Though threads can become canon, they cannot count toward AC.
If you plan to apply, please keep in mind that we do require at least one sample thread on the application to be from our TDM (though it doesn't need to be the current TDM).
You're welcome to use the provided prompts or come up with something on your own, but we do ask that all threads take place in our game's setting.

YOU'RE DEAD, JIM

You haven't been in Beacon long when you find yourself in Bonfire Square, staring into the flames and thinking about how you ended up here. Maybe it was an accident, a sudden freak thing that you never saw coming until you woke up on the ferry, or maybe it's a miracle you made it as long as you did. Maybe death was a relief. Maybe it was just your time. Whatever the case, you can't help but reflect on your final moments as you linger in the firelight.

But however you died, it's behind you now, and you're here, stuck in this little town with just a few buildings and a smattering of other people. You're going to be here a while, so you may as well get to know your neighbors, but... Would it be cathartic to commiserate about your deaths? Or is your time better spent stocking up at the general store? Then again, you've got plenty of time, so why not catch a drink or two (or three) at the Invincible? Pretend you're unaffected by your death, and, well. Fake it 'til you make it, perhaps.

Point is, you have options. You're dead, you died, and this is your "life" now. Better get used to it.

AND THEY WERE ROOMMATES

Currently, there's only one place to live (technically speaking) in Beacon: the Invincible, a tavern and inn located in Bonfire Square. Luckily, the place has working amenities (minus light), and the forest spirits don't charge anything for your stay. Unfortunately, it seems there may not be enough rooms for everyone. Guess you'll have to get cozy!

Maybe you'll try to pick a roommate from around town or in the bar downstairs, or maybe you'll just walk into the first room you see and choose that way. Want a room all to yourself? Get ready to fend off any potential intruders. And the fun doesn't end there.

The Invincible's rooms aren't all created equal. Some may have had their furniture stolen or become a dumping ground for unwanted pieces, resulting in a single bed, five dressers, and other equally distressing situations. Will someone sleep on the floor? Will you nail two beds together to form bunk beds? Maybe you just want to make this room into something more like home— potentially to your roommate's chagrin. Whatever you decide, this is where you're staying for now, so you might as well get comfortable.

HACKER VOICE: I'M IN

In order to use the network, you have to register a username. Er, at least, that's how it's supposed to work. For some reason, new users have recently been able to bypass that requirement, allowing them to post anonymously. Time to troll strangers on the magical internet!

Eventually though, you'll need a username in order to use the tablet's other functions, like the direct messaging system. So hey, why not take advantage of the ability to source opinions, and workshop your potential usernames on the network? Share ideas, get feedback, steal ideas, critique others, and figure out what you want everyone to call you.

TURN ON YOUR LOCATION

When you wake up, you're in the woods. An iron shackle complete with a chain leashes you to a tree, and the only light you have is your lantern. You've never seen this area of the woods before. You certainly didn't go to sleep here.

Hm.

But, all is not lost. You find your phone in your pocket, as well as a scrap of paper covered back to front in cryptic scribbles. Are these clues to your location? They must be. You also spot a key dangling from a branch, though it's hanging from a tree you'll never be able to reach from here. Perhaps someone on the network will be able to lend you a hand...

[Boromir has seen no familiar faces here thus far. He had looked to see his mother, perhaps, or his companions who fell in Osgiliath. But no one from their Fellowship, he hoped, not so soon - Frodo and Sam were away, and the little ones were alive when he last saw them. The others would have gone after them. They could still be saved. He has to believe that.

So his first reaction is far from pleased - he jerks abruptly to his feet, eyes wide with horror, the two halves of the Horn forgotten for the moment.]

Aragorn! What are you doing here?

That, I know not.

[ only that their party had been at the gates of mordor. willing to buy frodo and sam more time. willing to die for that end.

it is strange that he should meet this fate when he had been led to gondor's throne. but he does not regret his actions. ]

It is good to see you again. [ he yet wears boromir's vambraces. ] Are you well? Speak to me of what has happened since we faced the Uruk-hai.

[Yeah, Boromir has not yet noticed the matching vambraces. He clasps a hand to Aragorn's shoulder, looking him over as if to find traces of whatever killed him. His own wounds are gone, but the rents and bloodstains on his clothing remain; there should be some sign. But if there is, his eyes cannot pick it out in the flickering light.

His brow furrows at the question.]

It cannot have been more than an hour, by my reckoning. [How long for Aragorn?] I found myself on the shore and made my way here. I have met some others - it seems I look very much like a "Lord Stark".

[It's weird. This is weird.]

What has happened since I have been gone? You speak as if it has been some time.

[ gone are the garments boromir last saw him clad in. aragorn wears the white tree of gondor. armor fit for a glorious death. théoden had gotten his wish. aragorn would have wished to survive that fight with the orc creature. he has no wound - it crushed his chest with its foot. there was no blood. ]

I do. How has it been an hour? Months have passed. [ since he had bid him farewell and sent the boat over the falls of rauros. there was no time to grieve for him when they must attend to the ring.

seeing him now, sorrow clouds his eyes anew. they had no time to be the brothers aragorn knows they are. ]

[Boromir just shakes his head. He doesn't know. Maybe he was floating senseless out on that dark lake for months, and only just now made it to the shore? Nothing seems quite impossible, here in this land of the dead.]

...you went to Minas Tirith.

[Where else could he have gotten that armor? All at once, Boromir's voice is thick. His death is still so recent for him; he hasn't had time to let go of that hope for seeing his city again. He never will. But Aragorn kept his word, or died trying.

(Of course, Aragorn is no oathbreaker. Unlike some people)

More importantly, though:]

Merry and Pippin. What became of them? Were they still alive?

Yes, I did. [ he clasps boromir's shoulder. ] A brave man opened my eyes to the kindness and honor of Men. He has aided me on my path, which led me to the White City.

[ its u bro. feel that love. ]

Merry and Pippin are alive. [ safe, he cannot say or promise. it was they that led the charge to the black gates. ] Gandalf has returned. I took a host with me to challenge the Enemy, that his eye would not turn to Frodo, in Mordor. What more, I cannot say, for I know not.

[Boromir shifts a little, uneasy. He's not, by nature, a man who has difficulty accepting praise. Even if he were, the Captain-General of Gondor must get used to it; he's popular back home, and he's well aware of it. It was a love he returned in full.

But this? From this man, after what Boromir has only just, in his eyes, attempted to do? Maybe he died well, but that is little recompense to Frodo. Little even to Merry and Pippin, who got taken by the Uruks regardless of his efforts. Perhaps that would not have even happened, had Boromir himself not split their party so.

But he forces a half-smile, and tries to brush past it.]

Words better suited for a dying man.

[But he's not dying now. No need to be so kind.

At least it's easy to move on, because there was at least one completely wild thing in that whole infodump that absolutely requires more explanation.]

Gandalf has returned? How? [We ALL SAW that guy fall down an endless chasm! He had to physically carry Frodo away!]

I will not deny their truth, Boromir. [ nor how much his new perspective is because of boromir. he is much more willing to be a king now than the man boromir had met. it is his duty to serve this way. ]

You know Gandalf, he speaks in riddles. He returned as the White Wizard, saying his work was not done. We needed his power to face Saruman.

...well, I am glad to hear of it.

[That's still baffling to him, but he's not gonna complain that Gandalf is alive?]

I had dreaded telling Faramir of his fall. [mmmm hey here's a thought actually let's not talk about Faramir right now] So Saruman is defeated?

[ yeah let's not talk about faramir. ]

Yes, Saruman has been defeated. His armies are routed and his engines of war have been halted in their tracks.

And the men of Rohan?

[hey, hey, he said they weren't sending tribute to Mordor, he is tight with the Rohirrim]
