TEST DRIVE MEME #1

TEST DRIVE MEME #1

Hello and welcome to the In the Night test drive meme for June! Thanks for your interest in our game! Reserves open on June 20, and applications open on June 22.

While you're here...
  • Take a look at our rules and faq pages to familiarize yourself with the game.
  • Note that we have a reserve/application cap of 20 apps per month (this has been waived for the first month!).
  • TDM threads can become game canon if both players wish. If the situation isn't something that could happen in-game, you're free to chalk it up to some strange hallucination, a shared dream, or other mysterious circumstance.
  • Note that this is not limited to new characters threading with characters already in-game. If current players wish to thread out the TDM prompts as canon events, they are welcome to do so.
  • Though threads can become canon, they cannot count toward AC.
  • If you plan to apply, please keep in mind that we do require at least one sample thread on the application to be from our TDM (though it doesn't need to be the current TDM).
  • You're welcome to use the provided prompts or come up with something on your own, but we do ask that all threads take place in our game's setting.

Thank you again, and we hope you'll choose to join us!

log prompts

YOU'RE DEAD, JIM

You haven't been in Beacon long when you find yourself in Bonfire Square, staring into the flames and thinking about how you ended up here. Maybe it was an accident, a sudden freak thing that you never saw coming until you woke up on the ferry, or maybe it's a miracle you made it as long as you did. Maybe death was a relief. Maybe it was just your time. Whatever the case, you can't help but reflect on your final moments as you linger in the firelight.

But however you died, it's behind you now, and you're here, stuck in this little town with just a few buildings and a smattering of other people. You're going to be here a while, so you may as well get to know your neighbors, but... Would it be cathartic to commiserate about your deaths? Or is your time better spent stocking up at the general store? Then again, you've got plenty of time, so why not catch a drink or two (or three) at the Invincible? Pretend you're unaffected by your death, and, well. Fake it 'til you make it, perhaps.

Point is, you have options. You're dead, you died, and this is your "life" now. Better get used to it.

AND THEY WERE ROOMMATES

Currently, there's only one place to live (technically speaking) in Beacon: the Invincible, a tavern and inn located in Bonfire Square. Luckily, the place has working amenities (minus light), and the forest spirits don't charge anything for your stay. Unfortunately, it seems there may not be enough rooms for everyone. Guess you'll have to get cozy!

Maybe you'll try to pick a roommate from around town or in the bar downstairs, or maybe you'll just walk into the first room you see and choose that way. Want a room all to yourself? Get ready to fend off any potential intruders. And the fun doesn't end there.

The Invincible's rooms aren't all created equal. Some may have had their furniture stolen or become a dumping ground for unwanted pieces, resulting in a single bed, five dressers, and other equally distressing situations. Will someone sleep on the floor? Will you nail two beds together to form bunk beds? Maybe you just want to make this room into something more like home— potentially to your roommate's chagrin. Whatever you decide, this is where you're staying for now, so you might as well get comfortable.

network prompts

HACKER VOICE: I'M IN

In order to use the network, you have to register a username. Er, at least, that's how it's supposed to work. For some reason, new users have recently been able to bypass that requirement, allowing them to post anonymously. Time to troll strangers on the magical internet!

Eventually though, you'll need a username in order to use the tablet's other functions, like the direct messaging system. So hey, why not take advantage of the ability to source opinions, and workshop your potential usernames on the network? Share ideas, get feedback, steal ideas, critique others, and figure out what you want everyone to call you.

TURN ON YOUR LOCATION

When you wake up, you're in the woods. An iron shackle complete with a chain leashes you to a tree, and the only light you have is your lantern. You've never seen this area of the woods before. You certainly didn't go to sleep here.

Hm.

But, all is not lost. You find your phone in your pocket, as well as a scrap of paper covered back to front in cryptic scribbles. Are these clues to your location? They must be. You also spot a key dangling from a branch, though it's hanging from a tree you'll never be able to reach from here. Perhaps someone on the network will be able to lend you a hand...

[The look he gives her us polite enough, if plain. A brow lifts by barely perceptible degrees, and he nods.]

Maybe, but this place does not abide by reasonable logic. And we are very susceptible to pain.

[A brick on the head would surely hurt, is his meaning.]

I can go first if you want.

[-he says, already taking a step into the storage area, careful to not bump into a stray dresser with a hip.]

I wouldn't be surprised if we were susceptible to death as well.

[ A bit of a leap but she seems quite comfortable with that idea as if she's given it some real thought or thinks she has reason to believe as much.

She doesn't protest him going first, looking thoughtful as she trails him beyond the threshold, Allie's eyes narrowed as they skate over the stacks of bedding and numerous pieces of furniture. ]

This is an Inn... think they'd keep a list of their inventory?

It is...likely—

[His hands trail across the top of a second dresser that’s edged too close to another, having to maneuver his way with care. Sam’s fingertips leave a trail where his touch has interrupted a thin veil of gathered dust.

At least he’s used to navigating enclosed spaces — granted, with less limbs to worry about.]

—that there were records kept. But they may no longer be accurate, if there is no one updating them.

Do you require to see an inventory?

[ It doesn't escape her notice, the line his touch leaves in its wake. The proof that this room hasn't seen a single soul in... God only knows how long.

Her gaze moves over the various items, silently taking stock of all that can be seen, refocusing on Sam as he maneuvers his way between the furniture. ]

Seemed like a place to start. If we know what we have then we know what we have to work with.

We may try to locate a record later. [He isn't certain how much good it will do, but Sam is a curious sort, for good or ill. And compiling data is never a bad thing, is it?

Slowly but surely, they move past their obstacles. Sam finds himself briefly waylaid by one that is quite literally blocking the way forward with no feasible way around. Not without linens toppling over on them.]

We may have to climb over this one. Will you remain on this side? It will be easier for you to carry out, once I dislodge one of the mattresses.

It might give us a place to start. [ Her voice one of experience, which under the circumstances, was probably surprising.

Her own slight frame at least makes following the path he's carved somewhat easy, Allie's nose wrinkling at the dust they stir up and she's holding in a sneeze as he speaks again, one she unsuccessfully contains with a loud and abrupt sound that fills the small room and causes her eyes to water. ]

They couldn't have gotten rid of allergies with the afterlife? [ More a grumble than a serious complaint. ] Yeah - I've got it from this side.

[Funny how the sneeze sends a jolt of surprise up his spine, electric and buzzing. But Sam steadies himself as he hefts himself up the wooden dresser, toppled on its side — impulse reactions were going to have to be adapted to, he thinks. He should compile a list of important humanly aspects to not neglect at a later date.

But for now, he’s slipped over to the opposite side.]

We are ‘dead’, and yet still possess the normal functions of the living. This is both contradictory and worth investigating at a later time.

[He’s next to the mattress, and it’s easiest to start with the top one stacked just above his head. Sam grasps at it’s corners, pulling and tugging. It loosens, then slides out slowly, dislodging more dust.

And despite his care, the movement is still enough to shake their nearby environs, making a nearby stack of bedsheets and the like wobble precariously close to them. Sam pauses.]

As stated before, I believe you will have to accept and prepare yourself for that falling on you.

[ His start at her sneeze is met with little more than an apologetic smile, Allie throwing out a hand as if to prepare to steady him before refocusing her attention on a stack of bedding. ]

That's assuming we're actually dead. [ She says it casually, without the defensiveness of denial as she splits one pile into two. Turning in time to see another begin to teeter, but not quite quick enough to halt its fall.

One hand makes it above her head, the other trying to steady the tower but that won't stop a few folded sheets from hitting her in the face and chest, her long wavy hair flipping forward and falling in her eyes. ]

I probably should have gone harder on the preparation. [ Her tone dry as a small grin threatens to curve the corners of her mouth. ]

[personal profile] hexas 2019-06-17 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes.

[That's an agreement, spoken as he uselessly watches as the cloth tower already begin its slow and not-very-dramatic assault. Humor twists itself across his face, a smile that almost reaches his eyes. Sam's got the mattress practically held above his head at this point, and they both have their hands full.

They planned this well, yes.]

Who do you suggest assists whom?

[beep boop he's already decided that her aid might be more beneficial, as they're not really that worried about the linens if they fall, but he defers to her opinion first!]
mayorly: (allie75)

[personal profile] mayorly 2019-06-18 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
[ Blowing her hair out of her eyes, Allie gives a slight shove, just enough to make the tower wobble and spill away from them. ]

They'll need to be washed anyway. [ All covered in dust and stale smelling as they were.

Her height undoubtedly makes this a rather awkward rendering of assistance, but she manages to climb onto a dresser to be able to help steady the mattress, silently wishing they'd made a clear path instead of picking their way over furniture. ]

This seemed a lot easier in my head, ya know.
