"Lots of monsters in the sea are animals. Lots of nicer animals in the sea, too. Whales are all right."

So long as you stay on their good side, anyway. But isn't that the case with anything the size of an entire island but just as smart as a person? That's the sort of creature you appease and then get the hell away from before it can decide it's bored with you.
